hi could anyone help with brakes on my 1978 series 1.it is a
none servo car.jason is building a nice 1.3 8v so feel i would
like to upgrade.i have full cad drawing package so dont mind
some engineering work.should i upgrade front and rear or stay
with the drums on the rear.look is also important.cheers paul

Lot's have various idea's on this. I've never had a brake issue
on my hillclimb MK1 with std GTi calipers, offset brackets and
Corrado G60 discs turned down from 280 to 270mm to fit inside
14" wheels. When using 15" wheels the disc's can stay at 280mm.
I took the original servo off as it saved 14 kilo's plus it
helps very little with the effort needed to apply the brakes.
I originally used a non servo MK1 Golf/Polo master cylinder
mounted on the bulkhead but latterly a pedal box mounted up
under the dash, though I'm not a great fan of it, and mine
needed drastic strengthening to stop it twisting due to a poor
       design.
Could a floor mounted pedalbox be worth looking into on yours?
As for rear brakes...I've only ever used std drums, but there
are many disc options...Tim on here uses late Polo parts so he's
       worth a chat too.

thanks jason.i would like to run without servo if possiable to
keep things clean in the engine bay.also i am moving brake lamp
switch to the brake pedal, any ideas on best m/c to use so there
is no unused outlets.thought about 280mm with a set of 2 or 4
pot brembos.i am open ideas.cheers paul

The brake size sounds fine and Brembo's look and work
great...may need to look at aftermarket AP/Girling type
cylinders rather than o.e....all sortable tho. You wont miss not
having a servo with the right brakes and cylinder sizes and
       decent pads.

       non servo.cheers paul

I'm running 305 discs - way too much really for such a light
car. I'm still running drums on the back, as long as they are
well set up I don't think rear discs are required.
I've started installing an adjustable bias pedal box to help
tone down the front slightly. We'll see how that goes soon.

       Hi Paul,
As Jason eluded to I'm running late Polo 6N rear disc brakes on
my Mk1. The main reason I swapped to these was not to convert
to discs but to convert to the stronger and far superior rear
bearing and hub assys, so it made sense to switch to the disc
       setup while doing so....
The reason for swapping was that I had a catastrophic rear wheel
bearing failure on the std Mk1 drum taper roller bearing setup
as I was exiting Coram on the Snetterton300 circuit resulting in
a change in underwear being required ;)

       Tim
The late 6N setup uses a sealed ball race bearing unit, akin to
a std front Mk1 type bearing, which comes as part of the rear
hub and this is secured to the rear stub axle by a huge nut that
is torqued up 'FT'. The other advantage this gives over a Mk2
16v type conversion is that you can replace the disc without
having to do the bearings ;)
