Can anyone recommend a good camera for under £150?

Quick start-up is a requirement to capture those unexpected
moments.

There are lots to choose from Richard; from your comment I
assume you are thinking of a point and shoot. Your price range
also suggests a point and shoot unless you want 2nd hand.
Canon users will suggest canon, Fuji users will suggest Fuji and
so on. I am fairly new to photography and from my limited
experiance I believe most of them will give you want you need.
The best piece of advice I was given was go in to Jessops and
try a few, see what feels right or comfortable....Hope this
helps

Sound advice from Terry but I would add a further piece:-
From experience I find trawling the internet for detailed
reviews, often by Americans and always by men who will not have
girlfriends, is a valid source of detailed opinion on new
products. Often there are comparisons with other established
"class leading" products and examples of images taken by the
camera. Ease of use and some detail behind the headline
specification from the manufacturer is helpful in making that
final choice.
That's how I chose my current camera which is the best one I've
owned to date and not the most expensive. Got it online from
Jessops but picked up in store at less than the instore price -
best of all worlds.
Also like many things these days - is there any such thing as a
bad camera?

If you shop around you will find my current fave, the Panasonic
DMC TZ8 within your budget.
Great photos but rubbish reception for calls though.
Fred.
