A Club Red Christmas Part 6
by Jack Wells
I think we all fell asleep on the way home. And I mean all of
us.
We had a hayride basically to ourselves. It’s kind of hokey,
but it was still nice. They have a lot of pines out there… I
guess that’s obvious, since they grow Christmas trees there, but
that means it’s not all just leafless trees. The trail went
around where you could see most of the park, and we got to watch
all the people who’d come in earlier.
We all stood around the cars to say goodbye, even though it was
only going to be a couple of weeks until we saw each other
again. Mom and Aunt Linda agreed on a time to do the gift
exchange list, and Dad and Uncle Dave stood and argued for five
minutes - while Mom and Aunt Linda stood by tapping their feet -
before deciding we could have two turkeys and a brisket, so
there’d be plenty of leftovers, and so we could have a smoked
turkey and a fried one.
When we got on the road, Dad was driving. I think I remember us
stopping for gas, but I didn’t really get up. When we got home,
Mom was driving, and it seemed like Dad had taken a nap of his
own, so maybe it really was all of us that napped.
Mom’s still taller than me, so, once we got home, she helped
Dad get the tree down, while I took the little guys inside and
we made sure the way was clear and the tree stand was set up.
Once the tree was stable, Mom sent us to get cleaned up and into
our pajamas. Like I said before, we usually just sleep in our
shorts, but we do have some pajamas. Mostly for really cold
weather or company, but we also had some we wore for special
occasions - like decorating the Christmas tree. All three of us
had pants in some kind of Christmas plaid, and we each had a
shirt that matched the pants, but not each other.
It only took us about 30 minutes for all of us to get showered,
dressed, and back downstairs. In that time, Mom had put on some
pajamas and a robe, and Dad had changed to some sweats.
I’d never admit this to my friends, but it was fun. Dad fixed a
bunch of pizza rolls while Mom was sorting out the decorations.
The hard part was getting the lights and garland strung, while
the cats kept trying to help. Once those were on, we took turns
picking what went next and putting them on. We had these
stupid, old wooden ornaments that were like different kinds of
toys. I wish we wouldn’t even put them up, but Gavin loved
them, and Mom told me to just let him pick what he wanted.
As we finished up the tree, I was actually kind of surprised
when Mom told me it was my turn to pick the tree topper. I
wasn’t really into angels, and we had a couple of nice stars,
but my (and Mom’s) favorite was Santa on his sleigh, and it
actually circled around the top of the tree. Dad even let me
use the step ladder to put it up, instead of just picking me up
like he used to.
Once that was up, Dad dimmed the lights and turned up the
carols, while Mom got a fire started. Then, by the light of the
tree, we made s’mores. After a while, we turned the lights back
up and played Uno until bedtime.
It was a great day.
I just wish Sunday was half as good.
It started off pretty well. Mom was in a good mood, and she
made a big breakfast. Almost as soon as I finished eating, it
started going down hill, since she somehow decided - using some
esoteric mom-math, no doubt - that it was my turn to clean the
table and load the dishwasher.
Because we’d been so busy yesterday, and I’d helped Dad get the
Christmas ornaments down Friday evening, I still hadn’t done all
my chores or my homework. At least I managed to get a load of
school clothes in the wash, then I sat down to get the school
work out of the way.
Since it was kind of cold, Dad decided to wait to put the
outside lights up until after lunch. I’d kind of wanted to get
it done, but, since Mom didn’t have any lunch plans, Dad
promised to make us grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch, which
was enough of a bribe for me not to gripe.
The homework didn’t take too long. When I finished, I put on a
warm shirt and a hoodie and went into the garage. It wasn’t
really a huge mess, but it was pretty dirty. I had to sort a
few things, putting stuff that had gotten left out back where it
went, then I had to move a few things, so I could sweep
everywhere. I started to get Dad to okay it, then looked around
a bit, and used an old mop to clean cobwebs from around the
lights, then decided it looked good enough. Dad agreed. That
left me with enough time to give the interior of his car a
pretty thorough cleaning.
Dad makes great grilled cheese sandwiches. He uses a little
garlic in the butter, and he puts fried salami between two
pieces of cheese. They’re great, and we had them with tomato
soup and Fritos.
Afterwards wasn’t quite so great. I had to help him put up the
house lights, which mainly involved me standing there and
handing him things or holding the strings of light, while he
actually put them up.
Bo-ring!
We’d already got most of the lights out already, and I guess it
didn’t really take that long, but we weren’t quite finished when
Jerry came riding up on his bike.
“Sorry, I gotta help Dad finish putting this stuff up.”
Dad stood up and looked at me for a second.
“I think I can handle moving this stuff back to the garage. You
boys go ahead and play.”
“Thanks, Dad,” I tossed over my shoulder, as I ran to grab my
bike, before he could change his mind.
