A Club Red Christmas Part 4
by Jack Wells
Gavin was quiet as we all piled into Mom’s Forester. He wasn’t
moving stiffly, but I still didn’t blame him. It was
understandable that he’d been spanked for lying, and fairly
understandable that he’d had to do the chores he’d forgot. It
was kind of rotten that Mom had griped at him about making us
late.
We weren’t really late though. None of us had had breakfast
yet, because we were going to stop at Whataburger on the way out
of town. Mom’s a good cook, and I love when she has time to
make a real breakfast, but Whataburger was always great.
Forty-five minutes later, we were pulling onto the highway.
Between Dad’s buying a box of Whataburger Christmas tree
ornaments and his letting me get a chocolate shake and cinnamon
roll to go, Mom had rolled her eyes so hard I’m surprised she
hadn’t fallen over. She complained that I’d had a Breakfast on
a Bun and a Taquito, so there was no way I could still have
room. Dad just mentioned growing boys and got one for me and
one for himself.
“Craig’s gonna get fat!” Riley informed everyone. I just
ignored him, and Dad and Gavin laughed, but Mom had to correct
him about being polite and having good manners, which means he
got points for getting under Mom’s skin without actually getting
in trouble.
The trip was about an hour, and we were still running on time,
despite Gavin’s trouble and me and Dad having a little extra to
eat. Riley and I had brought our 3DS consoles. He’d gotten
back into YuGiOh lately, so I’d dug out my old 5D World
Championship cartridge to play him and help Gav. On the other
hand, Mom really wanted us to do something ‘as a family’ on the
way, and Dad had talked Gavin into watching Santa Claus is
Coming to Town. Mom wanted us in a holiday spirit, and we
wanted Mom not in the mood to bust anyone else’s butt today, so
we compromised and did what she wanted.
Santa’s Orchard is a tradition with us. It’s not just that it’s
a great holiday place, but it’s about halfway between our house
and Uncle Dave’s, and our family meets with theirs and hangs out
for a while every year.
The parking lot wasn’t crowded yet, and it was easy to see Aunt
Linda’s Equinox off to the side. We pulled up next to them.
It was cool, but not really cold, so I stuck my watch cap into
the pocket of my jacket, then opened the door.
Everyone said hello to each other. The little kids started
talking about what they wanted to do first. Aidan’s little
brother and sister, Tristan and Kylie, were 10 and 8, and the
two of them had already paired up with Gavin and Riley. Aidan
and I just rolled our eyes, and Dad and Uncle Dave said --
almost on cue -- “The first thing we’re going to do is get the
tree.”
“Jinx,” Dad said to his big brother and quickly counted to
three.
Mom and Aunt Linda just shook their heads.
It took close to two hours, but finally we had both trees
wrapped and secured to the roofs of each SUV, ready for the trip
home.
Once again, the kids started discussing all the things to do at
Santa’s Orchard.
“Nope,” Aunt Linda interrupted. “You’re not getting a chance to
get dirty yet.”
“Pictures with Santa first,” Mom announced.
Everyone was smart enough not to groan.

Great characters, but why would parents name their daughter
Kylie when she already had had a cousin named Riley?
Riley + Kylie = Way too cutesy!
Tsk, tsk. Poorly planned.
(I'm just kidding, btw. The name "Kylie" was my fault. Jack
asked me for a suggestion - he doesn't know anything about
girls! - so I threw out Kylie without even thinking about the
pre-existing Riley. The blame is all mine!)

That would actually make a nice set of names for boy/girl twins.
Kyle and Kylie. ;D

Not bad, considering they are from different families. Cousins,
not siblings. :D
