15 September 2018 - Just Stuff
By: Jack Date: September 15, 2018, 3:08 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
There honestly isn't much going on, as we complete the fifth
week of this semester. We're actually having moderately cool
weather for this time of year (I don't think it's broken 90F all
week), but we've had a lot of rain and it's VERY humid.
I'm very upset with the Dallas Cowboys right now. They aren't
playing this weeks game until 7:20 tomorrow night, so we're not
going to be able to do that for Devon's birthday. Instead, he
and some friends are going bowling this afternoon. Then they'll
come back here for supper and cake. I've gotten him a selection
of football movies that Liam and I were pretty sure he'd like
and doesn't have*, and we've 'reserved' the theater for him and
his friends. Some of them will be spending the night
afterwards, so they should have a pretty good time.
Liam, Kenny, and I discussed the dinner menu, and we're going
with something usual, but also a bit different: a menu of deluxe
hot dogs. We're also having plenty of cold sides, and we'll be
grilling outdoors, so the boys will have access to the pool
until they're ready for the movie. I'll make sure the other
boys know to leave Devon and his friends alone, but we'll be
there to sing happy birthday, and they'll be allowed to eat the
same thing.
* - Rudy, Remember the Titans, Varsity Blues, and Friday Night
Lights.
Funny thing - We had to go to Wal-Mart today to get some things
for the hot dog bar tonight. Have you seen those animal heads
that are about the right size for kids to wear? There was a
lean boy walking around with his family while he was wearing a
panda head. I'm guessing he was in the 10 to small 12 range.
He never took the head off where I could see, but his brother
was pretty cute. Now I want a story where a kid refuses to take
one of those off.
Things are going pretty well at school. I actually had my
second six weeks planned out before the first, so I won't be
scurrying quite so much after next week.
It doesn't look like most of the college kids have Columbus Day
off this year, but the UT boys will be home the first weekend of
Oct. Noah and Blake have tickets for the Red River Rivalry that
weekend, and the other boys are going to come with. We'll do
the initial Halloween decoration then, even though it's a bit
early. That will, at least, be a three day weekend for me and
the kids at home, so it's a good time to get it done. I think
Ryan and Thomas are planning to come home, and Jake and
Chritsian Hogan have talked about it.
We've been spending some time at my mom's house lately, and
she's reminding me why I don't spend a lot of time with her.
She's 70 years old now, and she doesn't get around very well
anymore (she's supposed to have knee surgery soon, which might
help, but she had some other problems they're trying to solve
before they do the surgery, so it's not scheduled yet). While I
understand some of it, she has WAY too many animals, and she
can't care for them. When you try to tell her that, she gets
made. I wouldn't make a big deal about it, except I have to pay
for the animals' vet visits (which I'm willing to do), but her
house reeks.
The honest truth is my mom is one of those totally deluded Trump
supporters. She will sit right there and tell me lies to my
face, which I'm kind of okay with. The problem is that, when I
correct her and show her proof, she still repeats the same lies
again. Because of that, I just don't want the younger kids
around her - at least not without me there. Fortunately, Mary
and Rose are both good with the kids, and Traci and Marcia and
Sarah (my nephew, Jason's wife), along with close friends like
Terri Marchant and Kim Malone, give my kids plenty of
mom/grandma type attention.
Anyway, I took some of the older kids over to Mom's a couple of
times lately, and we did the lawn, a lot of racking, did some
repairs, and Mr. Mintz is either sending some people to do some
larger repairs and recommending a couple of good subcontractors.
Mom doesn't want a maid service coming in and 'seeing her house
in a mess', and I'm not going to go do it myself every week or
make one of the boys do it, so I'm not sure where things will go
from here, but at least we're getting some of the problems taken
care of.

I love those heads. They make them for adults/older teens too.
Lynn bought the shark head for Halloween. Jack, it is a cute
idea for a Halloween story.
Frankly, I would think your mother should re-home some of her
creatures. Will she consider that at all?
Thanks for the updates.

No. I commented on finding a home for the kittens after getting
their shots and getting them fixed, and she went off on me.
