I announced elsewhere (in his own bio post) that Van is going to
be gone for six weeks this summer, to a camp that specializes in
       the arts.
Van and I have talked about this a couple of times, more
seriously after the deal was sealed, and we're going to be
moving Zeke into Van's room while he's gone.
Van and Zeke get along well. Van is (sometimes surprisingly)
patient with Zeke, and Zeke is good with the animals and loves
working with them. We'll be moving the hamsters with him, and
he's going to be responsible for the hamsters and rabbits, and
Van is going to show him how he does the other things, like
making meals for the ferrets (which I can handle, though Van
seems to enjoy it more than I do) and iguanas.
It hasn't been that long since Zeke received a pretty thorough
spanking for not cleaning the hamsters cages, but he and I have
discussed that, and he understands that not cleaning their cages
is (to paraphrase) 'not being actively mean, but it's still
being mean to them'. Since that spanking, he's been more
conscientious, and he understands that he's going to be in
charge, which means he'll have to be very responsible. I think
he likes that idea, and I'm going to try hard to keep up some
       positive reinforcement as he goes.
In the meantime, I think it'll be good for him and Liam to have
some separation for a while. It's not that they don't get
along, but they aren't friends like many of my boys who room
together, and Liam kind of has a bad habit of trying to run
things. As the oldest child growing up, I understand how and
why he probably has that, but I think Zeke needs to be
encouraged to take control right now, not to let someone else
run everything. Plus, while Liam isn't allowed to go running
free like he was, having more room for him to have his friends
come here for part of the evening will probably make things
       smoother for him as well.

       Yay for Zeke! ;)
Yes, giving his personal circumstances and the fact that he
should be getting used to taking more responsibilities, a bossy,
take-charge brother/room-mate may not be the best thing.

       away at camp?

While Fido is basically a well-behaved free roam bunny, he does
use his hutch for a few things and from time to time, and it
will remain in the bedroom where it is now, where Zeke will be
sleeping while Van's away. Fido will probably go to whomever he
pleases when he needs something, but he does spend a lot of time
with Zeke now, and Zeke will be caring for the lops, and Fido
usually helps with them, so I'd imagine the two of them will be
spending a lot of time together.

I know that Zeke is sleeping in Van's room to take care of Fido
and the rest of the pets, is he still sharing room with Liam?
Will he have his own room?
       :)

Van's room is too full for two people to share, if they're both
living here full time. I don't want to stress out Fido, so Zeke
will probably stay there until Monday, and we can switch them
       smoothly.
As long as the college kids are home, Zeke will have to go back
to Liam's room, but I think the time apart has been good for
both of them. There really weren't many problems even when they
were together. Once the college kids are gone, I can give Zeke
the option of having his own room, but he'd still have to go
back in with someone when they were home, and I'm not sure what
       he would think of that.

When I posted a general update, I received this response.

Thanks for the update Jack! How is Zeke doing?
       [/quote]
Thought it would be better to answer it here.
       Zeke is doing just fine.
He turned 26 a couple of months ago. He's ended up a bit over
average height, at 5'10" and about 150 pounds. He kept talking
about getting his GED, but he did well enough that he was able
to graduate with what Texas calls a 'Foundation' diplomat, which
is what most of us think of as just a basic old high school
       diploma.
College was never really an option for him. I should say, we
would have tried it if he'd wanted, but he was a great,
enthusiastic student. Fortunately, i know a lot of people in a
lot of different fields. Working with one of my business
partners (Mr. Mintz - Joe and Nick's Dad, who is a
subcontractor), we were able to let Zeke... sample? a number of
different fields. He basically worked as an unpaid gopher in
several different fields - plumbing, electrician, HVAC,
       construction, construction plumbing, construction electrical
(which is what Gordy does), and I think there were a couple of
other fields (I know he tried landscaping, but it's not really
professional work, and you basically have to own your own place
to make decent money, and he could do the work, but not run the
business). He did eventually get a driver's license, and he's
not had any trouble, but he's not comfortable enough with it to
make deliveries an option. He tried a couple of retail and
service positions, but he really prefers working outdoors.
Currently Zeke is working as a construction carpenter. He's
working with a guy who works for my old friend Ryan Hunter (a
boy Stevie and Mikell's age, who had several stories here at one
point). During the warm, dry weather, they have as much work as
they want to do (usually capped at sixty hours a week). He
should be finishing his apprenticeship next year, I believe.
He has his own apartment right now. I haven't had to threaten
to spank him for a while, but I do still get together with him
to supervise his bills every month, and make an occasional
welfare check to make sure he's keeping his apartment up to
code. After a couple of warnings, I took a paddle and a bath
brush to his place and left them. We only had to use them once
       - more on the line of a demonstration than anything serious, but
       they're still there.
We decided that Reynard should stay here, since he's so
energetic and likes the other dogs so much. We thought he'd be
sad and lonely living in a one bedroom apartment with Zeke gone
a large part of that day. That's good, because it gives Zeke a
reason to visit here frequently. The hamsters went with him.
Zeke has several good friends. All of them are younger than him
       - mostly 4 to 6 years I think. A few of them are leftover from
when he was in high school, and he met several other people when
he was taking courses he needed for his apprenticeship. They
all seem like pretty nice people. Some of them are over here
with him occasionally (like last Tuesday, for Independence Day
celebrations). Occasionally he'll bring them over here to use
the pool, when the one at his apartment complex is too crowded.
He does seem to have a girl friend. I would say they're dating,
but there's at least one boy he seems closer with. I'm not sure
if either of them is a sexual relationship, or if both are
platonic, but he seems happy enough.

Well, I'm glad Zeke is doing fine. That young man had a tough
start in life, and you really made a difference for him.
