Summer 2018 - Pickling
By: Jack Date: August 9, 2018, 4:34 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Hatch peppers arrived in the grocery last week. Noah was very
excited.
He bought a big batch of them, put together his picking kit,
picked up the new supplies he needed, and went to work.
Noah loves to pickle, not just for his own use, but he makes
gifts of his efforts. With that in mind, he sat out to make
fairly large batches of his hot pickled okra and green beans,
along with smaller batches of a few other things.
When he was finished with the first batches, he made himself an
omelette... and discovered that the peppers he'd been using were
actually pretty mild.
It only took a few seconds research to learn that hatch peppers
actually come in a huge variety of heat - from almost none to
way hotter than jalapenos.
I'm not sure what happened. We can't remember where he got the
peppers he experimented with last year, but the store he bought
them from this year must have used a different source.
Not being given to depression and disappointment, Noah got some
of his brothers to help, and they used the rest of the hatch
peppers to make some mild salsa. Then he spent a couple of days
visiting grocery stores and looking around online until he found
what he wanted. Then he went back to work, putting up more
batches that are carefully marked with red labels to indicate
that they're hotter than jalapenos.
The best thing of all this wasn't the salsa (and I look forward
to the mild stuff, because I love chips and salsa, but I can't
eat things that are too spicy anymore without risking payback),
but the pure good time he had learning (and teaching) about the
difference in peppers, locating what he wanted, and getting to
do more and try different stuff.
The funniest thing about all this is when I caught him talking
to one of the Boy Scout troops Monday (explaining what he was
doing with a couple of crates of peppers), and I realized how
strangely educated a lot of our Scouts are going to end up
being.

Yep. Sorry to hear he didn't get what he wanted. The town of
Hatch where the peppers come from is only 33 miles NW of here so
we are pretty familiar with the town and the pepper situation.
We've bought peppers in Hatch, but you have to ask the right
questions to make sure you are getting what you want. It's
still hit and miss.

He's still working. Anyway, it's hard to be sure how many,
since he's also picking other items.
