(End of) Summer 2018 Schedule
By: Jack Date: August 2, 2018, 5:12 am
---------------------------------------------------------
There are several things happening in the next two weeks or so.
I thought it might work best to start a new thread to discuss
them.
First of all, I should say that all the younger kids (up to
Parker and Liam) have had their physicals, and we've finished
clothes shopping for most of them. The college kids, including
Ethan and Jeremy, have their own Primary Care physicians now.
Jeremy and Ethan will actually be seeing the same doctor that
Daniel and I see, but he wasn't accepting new patience for a
while, so most of the current college kids are broken up among a
few local doctors, while Bryce and Noah, who both had minor
injuries last year, have a PC in Austin whom they're going to
see.
Speaking of the college kids:
Ethan - 12 August for orientation. Mike and I will actually
drive down there with him on the 11th, stay in a hotel that
evening, then we'll drive back the 12th, after the family part
of orientation. Orientation leads straight into the start of
school these days, so that will be it for him.
Jeremy - will be going to college locally, but it starts 20
August.
John - school starts the 20th. Dorms open the 16th. John has a
friend who lives locally, and who stored his dorm stuff over the
summer. We'll ship most of his stuff up there, he'll fly in,
spend a day with his friend, then they'll get moving into the
dorms before the weekend.
Bryce, the twins, Barry, Noah, and Blake - classes don't begin
for this bunch until 29 August. The residence halls open the
24th, so they'll be heading down that day. There was some
discussion about moving into an apartment or renting a house,
but they're happy where they are, and Bobby, Steve, and Cal
don't mind hosting them when they need to get some quiet, so
things have worked out well for them.
Mike Will be going down the 20th, because he has to be there to
work orientation this year.
Ryan - 20th August. He and Thomas have visited back and forth
several times this summer. Thomas is going to come down on the
15th, I believe, then he and Ryan will move in on the 17th. The
two of them are actually sharing an apartment off campus, so
I'll probably be driving out that afternoon to help them move
in. Fortunately, the UT boys aren't leaving until the next
week, so they'll have plenty of help.
Mickey - also starts classes the 29th. He'll be flying out on
the 24th.
Greg starts classes on the 27th. He's planning to leave here
the morning of the 22nd, so he can take his time, settle in, and
catch up with friends before classes start.
Did I miss anyone? Oh!
Jake and Christian Hogan - classes at Baylor start 8/20, but
don't start at ACU until 8/27. The boys are both going to fly
in here on the 10th, which will be a little crowded for a few
days, but it'll be nice to see them again. We tried to get the
rest of the kids to come visit before school started, but the
schedule just didn't work out this year.

I have almost finished the meetings with my upcoming students
and their families. There are a couple of more good
stories/cute incidents I need to share, but nothing really
major. On the other hand, we are going to have a family cook
out for my students on 11 August, with a movie to follow. I
expect some parents to hang out for a while, but this is really
going to be just for the students.

Where will Mike G live this semester? At home with you or at
school?

Mike goes to school in Austin - living with me isn't much of a
choice (This mornings commute is 4.25 hours)
Mike is going to be living on campus. He had thought about
sharing with Steve and Bobby, but then Cal moved in with them,
and everyone decided that would be too crowded. That might
change, since Cal and Bobby are on the road at almost opposite
times of the year, but both of them still want their own space,
with all their stuff, so they're going to see how it goes when
Bobby finishes for the fall, and then they'll decide how the
situation stands.

I'm going to be leaving in a few minutes for the end of summer
Scout meeting. Because of the size of the meeting and the heat,
we'll be holding it at the Family Center again.
There are going to be several things happening at the same time,
because we have a fairly big group of kids, and because we run
our Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts together. Normally we run smaller
monthly meetings, but this is basically a quarterly meeting.
We'll still be holding meetings the next two weeks, but I expect
them to be smaller, with some of the kids starting marching band
and football. There are actually two more Mondays before school
starts. Since that's on the 15th, we decided not to skip a
meeting this year, until Labor Day, since school is starting so
early, and on such a weird day.
In the meantime, tonight we'll be doing awards and promotions,
having talent demonstrations, showing off some projects, and
eating. It should be a good time for everyone.

Last night went great. We had a big turn out, so I'm glad we
went with the Family Center for this. Nothing special to
report, but a good time for all.
I have to admit I'm feeling a bit scatter-brained right now.
Part of it might be due to the weird weather we've been having.
Despite relatively cool weather, we're apparently still on track
for the second hottest summer on record, and all that dirt
caught in the high pressure fronts last month killed my
allergies. I'm not real sensitive most of the time, but once
they've been set off, it takes a while for them to calm down
again.
School starts the 15th, and I'm ready. The thing is, even as a
part-time teacher, I still have things I have to do on campus
between now and then. While we are a private school and don't
have all the hoops through which to jump that public schools do,
I'm informed we do still have basic meetings from how to do our
paperwork properly to sexual harassment guidelines. Thank Deity
I'm not considered a new teacher, because those guys have a ton
more they have to do.
I don't think this is going to effect my schedule much, since
I'll mostly be at school in the mornings, when I normally stay
offline anyway.
The big thing coming is Van finally getting home tomorrow.
That'll be great, and everyone's looking forward to it - except
Fido, who I'm relatively sure doesn't really understand what
'tomorrow' means.
Really, there are things I should be updating, and that I should
have updated a while back, but I just don't seem to have things
well enough together to get it done right now. I guess all my
organizational energy is going to school and kids, and the
forum's having to suck hind teat for now. Sorry.

Please file a Fido reaction report when Van gets home and
they're reacquainted!

It is hard to believe that school is back with us. I am also
amazed as to how many of your boys are in college now. When I
first started hanging out around here it seems they were all so
young.

It's been nearly 10 years since I started the forum - that's a
lot of growing up for my boys. More, five of the current
college boys were a main core of trouble and mischief back then
- Noah, Barry, Johnny, Josh, and Bryce.
