       First Period - Advanced Elementary
By: Jack Date: June 26, 2018, 4:18 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
As I mentioned elsewhere, I have tentative lists of my students,
and I've reached out to their parents. Since I already know a
few of them from one place or another and since some of the
parents have already responded, I thought I should try to get
some information down, rather than playing catch up later or
       simply forgetting it.
As I've said, I'm going to be teaching four classes - an
advanced class and a 'challeneged' or 'unmotivated' class each
for upper elementary (5th and 6th grade - about 10 to 12) and
middle school (7th and 8th grade, about 12 to 14).

       Owen C
       Dylan E
       Jacob F
       Luke H
       Adrian K
       James L
       Carter O
       Graham R
       Roger S

I should have added that I don't really know any of these boys,
and I certainly haven't written about any of them before. While
I've had brief exchanges with some of their parents, there have
been no meetings about them yet.

I'm not sure I could keep all these boys straight in my head. I
might have to drop back and punt when calling for one.
       "Hey you! Ya You."

I will do a seating chart for about the first week (and I make
sure the kids know that) while I get to know them (and they get
to know each other, since this is a mixed class). After the
first week, we'll be more open about seating, as long as it
       doesn't become a problem.

I recall a teacher with a stock response whenever she called a
name wrong, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

True, but these are pre-teen boys. "A sock, by any other name,
would still smell sweaty and slightly musty until it's washed."
Oh, I did get to meet many of these kids yesterday, at least
briefly. A cute bunch of squirts.

You seem to have several motivational tools at your disposal.

I'm honestly not sure what to call those two classes, because I
hate to use the word 'challenged'. I have four groups of ADHD
students, but half of them are readers, and the other half
       resist it.
I've met a number of these kids so far, though no more great
stories. Some of them are really cute, and I'd love an excuse
to paddle them, but it won't be happening because of their
       reading or lack thereof.
