       New Principal - Ken Sanders
By: Jack Date: June 26, 2018, 3:44 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I met the new... maybe it would be easier if we called them
Associate Principals... the new Associate Principal today. Mr.
P called to let me know he was going to be at the Academy and
asked if I'd like to come in to meet him.
When I arrived, Mr. P introduced us, and let him know I've been
working as an assistant principal when I'm around, as well as my
work with the ADHD and challenged reading students.
Mr. Sanders was actually my top choice for the job, so I'm glad
       he accepted it.
I found out that Mr. Sanders accepted the job at basically the
same time Andy accepted his. They were already looking for a
new home anyway, so it wasn't hard for them to close on one, and
they were actually here today to finish up a bit of paperwork.
His wife, Tamara, was also here, but she had driven separately,
and had left town before Mr. Sanders went to BCA.
Mr. Sanders wasn't by himself when I met him, though.
It turns out that Mr. Sanders is in his second marriage. From
his first marriage, he has a college-age daughter, one in high
school, and his youngest child from the first marriage is a
13-year old boy named Jeremy. From his second marriage, he has
       a six-year old son, a 4-year old daughter, and a 12-year old
step-son. Jeremy was with him today.
It also turns out that the house on which they just closed is in
Arbor Grove, maybe 5 blocks from our house. I don't know that
house specifically, but from what he says, it's a slightly
different floorplan from the Malone's, with five bedrooms
upstairs, and instead of the large master suite, it has a master
       bedroom and a separate office.
I invited Ken and Jeremy over for lunch, which they were happy
to accept. After we dropped their car off here, I gave them a
quick tour of the area. During that trip, Jeremy explained that
he's been living with his mom, but he and her step-son don't get
along, and it's gotten so bad CPS has gotten involved.
(Seriously, Jeremy has a small scar on his lip, where he'd
needed a couple of stitches after being punched my his
step-brother; however, the step-brother apparently had a black
eye and bloody nose). The problem is that his mother's husband
       was widowed, not divorced, so the kid had no place else to go;
ergo - Jeremy is now living with his dad.
Jeremy is an extremely intelligent kid. While his step-brother
(on his dad's side - Tamara's son) is an average student, but
more athletic, so might be attending the public schools, Jeremy
will definitely be attending BCA, where they're working on a
program with him taking a mix of 8th and 9th grade classes, with
       some self-study.
I asked Jeremy how it was going with moving in with his dad
       right before they moved.
"Pretty good. It'll be great to finally have my own bedroom
again. Right now, me and Da... I mean Dad and I are
       negotiating about rules and consequences."
"Oh really?" I said, leaving it open for him.
"Yeah, I tried to convince him I'm mature enough to make good
decisions, so I don't really need to be punished or no..
anything. Plus, I guess I know myself too well, because I
couldn't manage to say it with a straight face."
I wanted to pursue that conversation further, but we were
getting back home, and lunch was already set out.
Jeremy was pretty excited. While my kids are at camp...
"I thought your kids were at camp this week?" Mr. Sanders said.
"They are. These are.... Well, they just hang out here. Oh
wait, those over there are mine."
       Mr. Sanders: blank look.
Jeremy: "Oh man, this place is v." ( I'm pretty sure that's
       good).
Anyway, they had to leave after lunch (despite Jeremy asking his
dad if he couldn't just stay in my library until they get back),
but they're hoping/planning to get moved in at the end of next
week. They have some minor work being done on it, but all of it
pretty minor, and should be done this week. So, maybe they'll
be able to join us for the Independence Day BBQ.

Jeremy should be able to find some neighborhood friends at your
       place.
You need to invite him over for a swim.

I think it's simply a case that we've exceeded critical mass.
During an average summer day, we not only have my kids and
probably the grands, but we have plenty of older kids to
supervise the younger ones, we have a huge yard and the park
next door, and we have a large pool, the game room, a bunch of
dogs, and I keep food and drink available all the time (even if
most of it is healthy), so it's a combination of a good place to
hang out, and there always being a lot of kids around.

Like I said, they're having some minor renovations done before
they move in like cleaning and servicing the A/C, painting,
ripping out the carpet, and doing some renovations in the
bathroom and kitchen (Mr. P actually recommended Joe Mintz's
dad, but he's all tied up - mostly with trying to get Pump Up
the Jump finished - but Curtis Malone has people doing the AC
and he was able to recommend someone for the rest of the work),
so they probably won't be moving in until sometime next week.
However, I did make sure they were invited to the Independence
Day block party, and, while I explained our 'no girls without
warning' policy, I did make it clear the girls were welcome with
a bit of warning, and the boys were always welcome (within
       normal hours, of course).

I always love the reactions of new people...
So do you think he will be a frequent visitor now...
Sounds like the whole situation turned out good for this family
       and I wish them well....
       Thanks for sharing jack

From the way he talked, and as close as they'll be living, I'm
sure he and I are going to be close friends. I'm also pretty
sure he'll get along fine with my boys his age as well.

Mr Sanders introduced me to his entire family yesterday, and I
have to admit I was a bit surprised for some reason.
His wife, Tamara, is black. Actually a fairly nice looking
lady. She reminds me a lot of Angela Basset in Vampire in
Brooklyn or Strange Days, but with Viola Davis' complexion (yes,
I had to look that one up). She wears her hair like Simone
Missick (Misty Knight on the Luke Cage Netflix series) where
it's kind of an afro, but parted and hangs down. His 12-year
old step-son, Joe, is a decent looking kid, with what might be
called a very tight afro, and a much lighter complexion than his
mom has. The little kids are both lighter than even Joe, but
I'm not positive I have their names right, so I'm not going to
       risk it.
I didn't get to spend much time with them yesterday, but Ken and
Tamara both volunteered to help with some of the serving and
stuff, and Tamara umped the baseball game. I think they got to
meet and talk to a bunch of different people, and they seemed to
have a good time. I did find out that they already have the
major moving finished, and they're just unpacking boxes now.
It's really simple to get from their house to ours (Arbor Grove
is a basic grid and the roads are almost completely straight),
so Jeremy and Joe are going to be allowed to take a break from
unpacking their rooms and come over for a while today.

Had Ken Sanders spoken much about his family before you actually
       met them?
I think I remember that there were to be two other principals
hired. Has that already taken place?

Great that you met the family and that they will live close,
Jeremy and Joe will be frequent visitors!
Ken had already seen your place with lots of kids, what did they
say of all the people they found yesterday? :o

No and no. Which is to say that we only met for a few hours,
and he hadn't said much at all about his family. Also, no,
they're not going to be hiring more principals. He is the only
new one this year, largely because they felt Mr. P couldn't deal
with discipline on all the boys and deal with his other duties
       as well.
On the other hand, they are hiring at least 8 new teachers, and
I'm not sure how many of those besides Andy and Bobby they've
       already hired.
