I can't believe how long since I updated about this - tempus
fugit and all that, I guess.
First of all, Russell is attending public school, simply because
BCA doesn't have a dedicated program for autistic students, and
they have some excellent special ed teachers in the ISD.
Russell is capable enough that he's mainstreamed in some of his
classes. He seems to be happy and doing well.
Because Carter repeated 8th grade, not a high school grade, he
is being allowed to play football, and he's enjoying himself.
It's a real shame that most of the BCA football players I knew
have graduated, but he and Donny Malone are good friends, and he
gets along well with a lot of the public school boys.
Dash and I are doing great. I've managed to avoid spanking him
so far, but I'm pretty sure it's going to happen soon. I
understand how ADHD he is, and since he doesn't live here (and
he does try to follow the rules), I've cut him more slack than
maybe I should have. On the other hand, maybe I should have
already yanked him up short, because he's been pushing
boundaries lately. Worse than that, the last time I let him off
when maybe I should have spanked, he let that slip to Andy, and
we both got in trouble. Now I've had to promise that I'll spank
him just like I would Jake or one of the grandkids the next time
he blatantly breaks a rule, so I'm pretty sure we're on a
countdown now. That's actually okay. i don't hear about them
as they happen, and I don't usually hear much in the way of
details, but I know he's had more than a couple of spankings in
the nearly three months since I've updated. From what Andy's
said (and from what I've seen), as resistant as Dash is about an
upcoming spanking, he recovers from them quickly, so I'm sure
we'll be fine if/when it does happen.
Anyway, the reason I'm writing this now happened at school
today. I don't know all the details, but apparently one of the
Senior teachers (history?) is fairly lax on students remembering
to turn off their phones. Usage of them isn't allowed, but the
kids are supposed to turn them off before school starts, and not
have them out while class is in session. It seems like - a
couple of days in a row - different people got calls or texts -
aloud and during class. Those times, the teacher didn't make a
big deal out of it. It kind of backfired, and it became a
running joke with the kids calling each other while blocking
their number. The teacher came down like the wrath of God on
Tuesday or Wednesday, and there was a day or two of quiet. Then
today, Carter had his alarm set to go off during class and set
to use a phone ring as the alarm. He managed to stop the noise
before the teacher found him, so he might have gotten away with
it, but she had it narrowed down, and - unfortunately for him -
he hit 'snooze', instead of off. When it went off again, he was
       caught red-handed.
Mr. Sanders was out today, and Mr. P had an upcoming meeting, so
Carter was referred to his big brother. Since the principals
weren't available, he came to me during homeroom, and I got to
be the official witness to Carter receive 8 swats bare from
Andy. Carter managed not to break down, but they were very firm
swats, and the young man was yelping hard and loud by the time
       the last two landed.

Unfortunately if you give an inch some people will try and take
       a mile.
I guess the boundary has been set, now. Let's see if anyone
else wants to step over it?

Eight swats? That seems a little over the top
       [/quote]
I had wondered if someone would say that.
Remember, that not just is having one's phone out and on during
class a violation of the rules, but this was a deliberate
provocation AFTER the teacher had given a strict and final
warning, and it was disrupting class. I know this was meant as
a prank, but I think this is a good way to remind young adults to
think about the prank they're pulling AND about the possible
       consequences.
Plus, remember that BCA doesn't feel the need to swing for the
fences like some public school's are known to do.

So you both got spanked? :D

What caught my attention was not the number of swats, but the
fact they were bare. I understand that it was a deliberate
indiscipline, but I thought bare was reserved for offenses
serious enough to call the parents. Was this one so bad? Another
thing I'm curious about: given that Andy is Carter's eldest
brother, isn't there a policy that when the student in trouble
is a relative of the teacher it's better to delegate on someone
else, to make sure the student is treated in an objective manner
(i.e. not more leniently and also not more harshly).

It's interesting to me that you actually point out that this is
a school where parents are called for, and sometimes actually
handle, the discipline, yet ask about teacher's having to
       delegate.
I think the problem with this is that it was multiple offenses,
committed AFTER a warning had been issued, which is why it was
seen as being very serious. However, I also assume that Andy
has a much better idea of Carter's discipline record than I do.

Well, touché, but what I would find a bit unfair is if Carter
was held to a different standard than the rest of the students
because his brother is a teacher. Not saying that's the case,
       just wondering.

On the one hand, I think that's always going to be true. I
think that if you are a teacher and work with a kid's parents,
it's natural to have a word with those parents if the kid is
giving you problems, even if it doesn't rise to the level where
you would go out of your way to contact parents. On the other
hand, even though it wasn't Carter (as far as we know) who'd
done the previous incidents, I think this was seen as pretty
serious because of the ongoing nature of the prank, and because
the students had had multiple chances to stop before this
happened. I honestly don't know if a parent would have been
contacted if it was another student, but I know that I would
have given a rather serious paddling if I'd been handling this
issue, even if the boy would have probably kept his underpants
up for it, just so I didn't have to contact the parents and
       wait.

Carter received a pretty standard lecture/explanation for why he
was going to be paddled, but I think it was more a teacher
       explaining than a parent lecturing.

This situation seems very similar to the one in A School
       Paddling Surprise
  HTML http://www.bransomtx.com/schoolsurprise.html
       where you described
paddling Ben. In that story Mrs. Rowe offered to delegate, but
you turned down her offer and it appears Ben didn't mind.
