1 June 2018 - Jeremy and the Flying Graduation Trip
By: Jack Date: June 1, 2018, 4:27 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Things went great for us yesterday. We had to pull Kenny out of
school a bit early, but we were able to get through Texarkana
before traffic started, which meant we had plenty of time.
We arrived at Jeremy's Mom's house just before he had to leave
to get ready, but at least the kids were able to say hi to him.
Of course, he and Ethan had to give each other a hard time about
Jeremy graduating first.
His mom offered to feed us, but we thanked her and declined.
His little sister is a bit more than a toddler now, but it
seemed pretty obvious she had her hands full trying to get
everything done. Out of the four of us, none of us really
wanted fast food (well, Leif will always eat a hamburger, but
even for him, something different sounded good). We talked
about Mexican food, but we all grew up on Tex-Mex, and the idea
of Arkansas Mexican food just wasn't that tempting. We ended up
eating at a pancake and waffle house - like a motion to adjourn,
breakfast is always in order!
All three of the boys did some studying on the drive up, but
they're all fairly confident, so we spent a good part of the
trip listening to my 'sing along Broadway' playlist. None of
them are the Broadway fans Ryan and I are (or even Noah), but
they all enjoy when we go, they all have their favorite shows,
and they're all musically inclined, so it passed time.
The ceremony was a graduation ceremony. I think that's all I'll
say about it. From what I remember, they're boring even for the
people engaged in them, but it's still an important milestone.
Afterwards, we got to meet a lot of people - a couple I'd met
before, a few I might meet again, but most of whom I didn't even
try to remember. Jeremy was mostly saying 'Hey (so and so),
this is my Dad and my little brothers.' He was excited, and I
don't blame him.
He was also very busy. He did open his gift, and he loved it,
though he has to get it turned on, so he mostly just oohed and
ahhed a minute, then passed it over to his mom for safe keeping.
And that's about it. We all have school this morning, so we
couldn't hang out with him, and I'm sure he was more excited
about hitting the parties with his friends. He would probably
have hung out with us if we'd stayed, but I didn't want to make
him chose, so we excused ourselves after a bit and took off.
Ethan drove part of the way home, letting me take a quick nap.
Then I took over, and all three of the boys managed to get some
sleep on the way. It was very cute, because Leif and Kenny were
leaning against each other by the time we got home, like when
they were little.
As for Jeremy, he's going to be arriving here in about ten days.
He has a couple of his football friends going into the
military, and I think they're leaving about the middle of June,
so he wants a bit of time to hang out with them before then.
They also have some plans to do a bit of camping, and to hit a
couple of moderately local amusement and water parks. He'll
actually be joining us here right before the kids leave for
camp.

I did want to say that Jeremy managed to return the favor.
I wasn't sure I was expecting him or not, considering it was his
first day out of school, and I know he was planning on being
with friends a lot of Thursday night. Still, as I was getting
ready to leave for the ceremony Friday evening, Jeremy arrived.
He grabbed a quick shower, changed into slacks and a polo, and
I had a bite waiting for him to eat when he came down. The best
part was, as the seniors were walking in, Ethan was almost at
the back of the line, I saw him looking around, and you could
see the moment he realized Jeremy had made it.
Jeremy was at least able to spend the night with us, so he
didn't have to repeat our late night trip home, but he took off
early the next morning. Right now, he and some of his best
friends are having a last camp out before two of them leave for
the armed forces. He's going to spend another week there,
before he moves in here with us.
