17 May 2018 - First Signs of Summer
By: Jack Date: May 17, 2018, 4:52 am
---------------------------------------------------------
I mentioned we opened the pool. That's really more a sign of
spring, but this year, it was just in time for the first sign of
summer - my college boys are arriving home. Everyone, including
Christian and Jake Hogan, will be arriving either today or
tomorrow. It's funny, because things are actually more spread
out than that at the various schools, but boys like Mickey and
John, who go to school further from here, spent a few days with
their friends before heading home.
Ryan has a last final tomorrow morning, so he and Thomas (who
are still apparently happily dating) wont' be here until
tomorrow afternoon.
The UT boys should have been home yesterday, but they spent the
night at Bobby and Steve's, so they could go out with friends.
They'll probably be leaving after sleeping in and breaking their
fast, so I expect them mid-afternoon.
Christian is considering spending his last year or two at ACU,
so he drove out there and stayed with Jake for a couple of days.
They are supposed to be leaving first thing this morning, and I
think it's about a three hour drive, so I might be having lunch
with them.
It's kind of hard for Greg. He should be able to make a one day
drive, but it's hard to do after he's already had finals. He
had an afternoon final on the last day, and most of his friends
were already gone, so I told him he could just stop at a motel
and put it on the card if he needed. He called me last night
about 8pm to say that's what he was doing, and he included a
picture of him eating dinner at a Denny's. I'm sure he won't
bother with an alarm, and I don't expect him until early
afternoon.
I don't remember when John and Mickey's planes are arriving, but
both of them are taking Uber home, and I expect one of them (I'm
pretty sure it's John) early afternoon, and the other around
supper time.
Who else? Oh, Mike will be home with the UT boys this year.
That's great since his birthday is Saturday. Kevin Craw (KC)
finished his finals, and he's already at home, though he arrived
after dinner last night, so I'm sure he and I will catch up at
some point today. Of the other boys with whom I'm close, but
who aren't family, I know Denny and Eli are both already home.
I've actually seen Eli a couple of times now (I was able to
introduce him to Garret Riley already), and I'm sure I'll see
both of them today. Of course, Blake stayed with the other UT
boys, and he'll be home today, though I don't know if his mom
will let him free for a couple of days after he gets there.

The house filled up fast yesterday - not that it seems crowded
(at least not to me, I still have my own room); it just seems
happier.
I know that there has to be a pool at pretty much any college,
but the boys spent all afternoon outside, in and out of the
pool. They were eating and diving and swimming and playing with
each other and the animals. All of my boys follow my... not
quite requirement, so let's call it a 'strong suggestion' that
they still physically active and take gym classes every
semester, so it doesn't look like any of them have even put on
their freshmen 15. Which is nice because they spent most of the
afternoon naked, until about time for the younger boys to
arrive.,
The dinner table was too full, even at full extension, and the
younger boys even argued over who got to sit with their big
brothers.
Side note: I just realized how much Kenny has grown up lately,
when I watched him willingly turn his chef's hat and apron over
to Ryan and stepped back to allow him to run the kitchen last
night.
There was a ton of talk and news, but nothing too important. I
don't even remember half of it, just sitting here trying to
bring it to mind. A lot of it was just who's been doing what,
how things have been going, and how someone else is doing. The
most important thing, as far as I can tell, is that Thomas
(Ryan's boy friend for over a year now) finally shaved the
skeezy little mustache he wore (I swear, the thing looked like
thick peach fuzz as long as I knew him).
Deadpool starts this evening, and we have a theater tonight.
Besides that, no one has any major plans. I think most of the
kids just want to take a few days of quiet to relax. Thomas is
going to stay here with us for the weekend, then Ryan will run
him home, and Ryan will stay there for a few days, then he'll be
back alone for a visit. Other than that and working to save
some money, I don't think anyone has any plans in the longer
term either.

I learned to swim at the YMCA at a time when they didn't permit
bathing suits. Dad watched from the bleachers along with a
number of other fathers. It seemed strange at first but I got
used to it pretty quickly and got over any shyness about Dad
watching. Even the pools at my graduate school were clothing
optional, but that's all changed now. It's a lot more
comfortable not wearing a cold, wet bathing suit.
