Teaching 2018/19
By: Jack Date: May 13, 2018, 3:51 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
I should probably be clear that they have invited me back to
teach again next school year. While they really want me to take
a VP position and handle boys' discipline, to free Mr. P up for
a number of other things, I have also been offered a 'straight'
teaching position, much closer to what I'm doing now (presumably
including occasional discipline issues).
While there are a number of options on the table right now, what
I'm learning towards most is teaching four classes, meaning I'll
go in first thing in the morning, and I'll teach basically until
lunch time. That should give me a bit more time in the
classroom, while still getting me out in time to take care of
things at the stores and at home, and maybe even catch an
occasional nap or just read.
They do want me to stay with more of a traditional classroom if
I come back. There are currently five classes I'm considering -
an honors lit class for 5th graders and one for sixth graders,
another class for 'discipline problems' and slow readers like I
had this year - probably one for upper elementary (5th and 6th)
and one for middle school, and then a follow up for some of the
students I had this past semester, but one that deals more with
writing and grammar specifically than I have this year.
I have pretty much committed to come back, but we have to make
some decisions about exactly which classes soon.

It sounds very rewarding if you can make it work with your
current schedule.
Sleep is highly overrated anyway.

While an occasional nap is nice, sleep doesn't really have much
to do with it.
After a full year, I'm really happy with the job Daniel is
doing. He's still interested in it and enjoying it. The
problem is, while he's learned the admin jobs, I want him to
work in one of the stores as an assistant manager for a
consistent, long period, which means someone else has to take up
the admin work (and who is there except me?). I feel he has to
have that as part of his training, but the more time I spend
teaching, the harder that will be.
Still, I do love teaching.
I've limited myself to four classes, since I need afternoons
free for those times when business stuff arises. Of the five
classes I mentioned in the first post, I think they've agreed to
allow me to combine the two, upper elementary, honors classes,
into one class (which sounds like it's going be be high school
reading anyway, so it will be limited more by appropriate
material than by exact reading level), then I'll have two
'discipline problem' classes like I had this year, and one group
of some of my students from this year in a second year class.

I am being curious again.
I am assuming the class you taught this year was all boys. I
come to that assumption because the book list was boy centered.
That and it being a discipline and slow reader class. Boys tend
to fall into that mold.
Are the classes next year going to be only boys, or coed? Since
we are talking about honors classes, I would expect girls to be
in that class.
I never asked if BCA segregates it's classes. Boys and girls
having separate classes.
If the classes are going to be coed, I would also imagine the
book list will change to a more centrist or balanced list for
both boys and girls.
Like I said. I am just being curious. It happens when a guy
has too much free time on his hands.

I have explained this before, but I don't remember where or
when, so...
BCA gender segregates classes from 5th to 9th grade, with a few
exceptions (mostly electives). That's actually the reason Colt
is attending there - not only are those classes all boys, the
teachers for them are all men.
No, I'm teaching to boys. There are plenty of female teachers,
and that's part of the problem with boys reading. Especially
with lower grades, most teachers are still female, so they tend
to heavily influence the reading lists. One of my big goals is
to help boys learn there's a lot of stuff out there for them.
Despite that, I will be changing the reading list a bit, but not
for gender reasons - simply adjusting, primarily for age.

One of the big problems I'm having here is that I want to teach
five classes - an honors class for for and sixth grade, and one
for 7th and 8th, and an undisciplined class for the same groups,
as well as keeping some of my current students in a continued
group.
That's a problem, because it will involve me staying at school
through lunch, and not being able to leave until after 1pm,
instead of leaving before noon, like only four classes would do.
While that probably doesn't seem like a lot, you have to keep in
mind everything else I have going on, from handling business
matters, to checking in at Magicat's, to just spending time with
my boys or dealing with issues around the house.
It looks like we've solved that issue.
We had already decided that this would work best with younger
kids, so most of the boys already in high school were going to
be in regular classes next year, meaning I was going to have
about 14 boys from my current three classes in one class. What
Mr. P suggested, is that they could easily roll most of those
boys over into one of the other classes I'll be teaching.
That makes a new set of troubles, since I was planning to teach
some of the same books again next year, but I see at least a
couple of ways around that, and so that's what I'm going to do
...
Advanced class for 5th and 6th grade
Advanced class for 7th and 8th grade
Undisciplined Readers class for 5th and 6th grade
Undisciplined Readers class for 7th and 8th grade
And I'll definiitely have Paul and Gary and Asa back, as well as
some of my students I haven't talked about as much.
This is great, because now they can put the rosters together and
start talking to the parents, and I can get a firm look at what
reading levels we're discussing, so I can start making solid
plans.

It's going to end up being a total of about 50 minutes longer
than I spend there now. It might mean a little more work for me
in the evenings, or losing a bit of nap time, but I should be
able to cope, and it should be a lot of fun.
Mr. C had already put together a list of boys for my
undisciplined class, in discussion with their English teachers
and the department head, and a more tentative list of the honors
classes.
My undisciplined classes are going to be as much about learning
and teaching methods as anything else, so I'll probably be
teaching them close to the actual grade levels, starting a bit
on the low end and aiming at finishing above. From the quick
glance I just took at the advanced classes, I'll probably be
doing about 9th grade as an average for the elementary class and
12th for the middle school class.
Oh, I already know several of the kids who are earmarked for my
classes next fall. The standout of those is that my cuddle
bear, Ennis Strouse, is supposed to be in my advanced
elementary class. I guess there are more than one or two I'll
have to have a discussion with about appropriate behavior at
school. At least Ennis has already made several trips over my
lap, so at least how hard I spank shouldn't come up as an issue.
