Huck - John Micheal Wells
By: Jack Date: May 13, 2018, 6:55 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Huck hasn't been a major player around here for a long time, so
allow me to make a quick re-intro for him for new readers.
I actually started working on a bio page for him, but there was
more information and anecdotes than I'd expected, and I didn't
want to get bogged down. Instead, I'll just sum up.
Huck is 22 years old as of February, making him about 7 months
older than Noah and 13 months older than Barry. When his dad -
my half-brother Jason - lived on the far side of the Metroplex,
Huck spent a lot of his visitation and vacation time here (his
mother still lived in Bransom until he was about 13).
Huck wasn't a bad student, but certainly not a great one. His
worst problem (in my opinion, at least) is that he doesn't have
a lot of motivation. He's tried going to school, and he's
checked out a number of other ideas, but he can't find anything
he's enough interested in to study. Instead, he's just held
down some basic retail-type jobs. For some reason, that seems
to offend his father.
Jason seems to feel that Huck's situation is analogous to my
situation with Clayton. I disagree. Clayton is accepting money
in what's beginning to seem like a bid to be a career student.
On the other hand, Huck is not only paying his own car
insurance, phone, and internet, but he's giving his dad money
for room and board, as well as helping with his siblings and
still doing chores. While I would prefer Huck go to school and
have something more than basic retail, at least he's
contributing in a number of ways.
However, he is Jason's son, and it is Jason's house, and Jason
has asked him to move out.
As I said in my Busy with Business thread -
HTML https://jackshouse.createaforum.com/general-discussion/busy-with-business/msg5622/#msg5622<br
/>- I have bought the old Toys R Us building. There were two
major reasons I'd held off on that, and the second was that I
wasn't interested in trying to run something else, and I didn't
have anyone I could rely on to run it for me. When Huck talked
to me about his dad's ultimatum, I decided to make the move.
Huck is doing a lot of extra work right now, though much of it
is for himself. He's looked into current rent for apartments he
likes, and I'm going to pay him enough that he can live
comfortably, though he'll need to find a room mate to split
costs (yes, Clayton is one possibility). He and I have talked
it over a couple of times, and I'm going to put him in a
co-manager situation, where he'll have a chance to get some real
experience and learn a lot of the detail work. On the other
hand, I trust him, so I can hire someone with more experience,
but whom I don't know as well, and still be comfortable with not
being there to oversee everything.
At this point, Huck is finishing up his current job, and he and
I are already doing a lot of research. I have a general idea
what I want (inspired largely by having to go all the way into
Dallas for a number of recent birthday parties), and we're
looking into whether we should go with a franchise or branch out
on our own. Considering what we already have, there's a good
chance we're going to end up with an indoor bounce house, maybe
some trampoline rooms, bounce house rentals (which I currently
do from the Party Palace), and then some type of food and
beverage - possibly a franchise inside the larger business.
The most fun part about all this is, while I incorporated it
separately from my previous businesses, because we're using a
different financial model, and I wanted them split for security
reasons, it still falls at least partially under Jason's realm
as my business manager, which means he'll have to work with Huck
on some of this.
Anyway - no spankings, but that's what Huck and I are currently
up to.

Thanks for the update, you hadn't written about him here for a
long time (unless I missed it). I'm glad you could give him this
opportunity, particularly if it's something that might give him
a learning opportunity to advance in this career.

That sounds like a great business to have and they are very
popular .... good luck on your new adventure with Huck......
Sounds like a good move for Huck and maybe Clayton if that’s
what’s decided.....
Thanks for sharing jack

Like I said, Huck is 22 now. He has two younger, half-siblings.
Kevin is about to start his junior year and will be 17 in
September, and Charlotte, who'll be 15 next month. I know Huck
got paddled pretty much throughout high school - once or twice
with Daniel, I think, never for anything serious. On the other
hand, Kevin is a quieter, better behaved kid. While Huck has
been helping Jason and Jo Ann with the kids for years now, I
think it's been years since Kevin or Charlotte was spanked.
In other words, while they're around for holidays, and while Kev
is a semi-regular visitor here (and at my store - he is a
serious player of Magic and Yugioh), there just hasn't been a
lot to say about them related to the forum.

It is a good and trending direction to go with a business.

More importantly, I'm tired of having to drive into Dallas for
the kids birthdays. We have several different things going on
(inspections, awaiting responses), but what I really want is
something that will make a good, family-oriented, birthday party
destination, that would also be fun for other occasions.

Huck is kind of tied up with my new business right now, and I'm
not sure where to post updates.
For now, I'm going to say that we're supposed to finalize
purchase of the building this afternoon. Steve is doing some
work for me, looking at the plans we have of the building, and
trying to figure out what we can do with it. Huck is gathering
a lot of information, about some possibilities like franchising.
We know we're going to have to do some renovations on the
building, and we want to get started, so it doesn't just sit
empty, but we need to know exactly where we're going first. We
do know some of the things we definitely want to do, so we're
trying to set those in stone, and Steve is currently checking
for things like utility inflows and where would be the best
place for something like a kitchen.
We know we want this to be a destination spot for birthdays,
something that will be fun for kids and adults, and something
where people can just casually hang out for a few hours or make
a big deal. We don't have room for go-karts, without giving up
too much of our parking lot (and I don't want that kind of
insurance hassles), and we're pretty sure we're not going to do
laser tag. Other than that, we're pretty open right now, but we
want to make our decisions and get the renovations under way
soon.
As for Huck specifically, he's working in the stores part-time,
then working with this. I'm paying him his full salary now, and
sub-contracting him to Magicat's, but he's having to keep track
of his hours and justify himself to me. We'll see how it goes.

I started to say this on the thread about Pump Up the Jump, but
I'm trying to keep things separate, as hard as that might be.
I just wanted to say that I'm really happy with Huck right now.
Either he's much faster than I expected, or else he's putting in
more time than he's admitting to. I don't want him to burn
himself out, but that's certainly a good trait in an employee.
He's managed to research and contact a number of franchise
options for us, as well as making recommendations as to which he
thinks are best, he's working with Steve on possible floor plan
ideas, and he's still working at Magicat's a couple of days a
week.
He's still living at his dad's house. The apartment we've
reserved is opening up today, and they're going to install new
carpet, paint, do a couple of minor repairs, and upgrade the
refrigerator, if I remember correctly. He is rooming with
Clayton, but they also went with a three bedroom, and they have
another roommate who used to be a regular around here, and was
one of Ryan's best friends for a while - Tony Marcotte. Since
Huck is going to be working for me, I've covered his share of
the costs as well as Clayton's, and Tony's Dad covered his.
With Memorial Day next week, it'll take a few extra days, but
they should be able to move in next Thursday.

Huck and Tony have. Clayton will finish moving in tomorrow
(there was a screw up with his work schedule, and he's been
short on time).
The boys have a really nice apartment. It's not perfect, but
each boy has his own bathroom (though only one has a tub -
neither of the other two boys mind showering most of the time).
The only thing I would really like in my apartment that this
doesn't have is a fireplace.
All the utilities are already on, and my housewarming gift to
them (a new dinette set) arrived yesterday. Besides that,
they're making do mostly with used furniture, tho Clay and Huck
both have some money saved. While they're mostly going to hold
on to that for tighter times, they have both pretty much decided
to buy an easy chair for themselves.
