Re: 25 April 2018 - The Continental

As I said elsewhere, Marcus and I met Andy Jackson, David
Warren, and Bobby Witte in front of the Continental for lunch
today. I was happy to see it was busy.
I was surprised to see Crystal Seaton acting as greeter.
"Hi, Uncle Jack. Glad you could make it today."
She gave me a hug, and since she's now a good looking 15-year
old, the other guys (except Marcus) were giving me strange
looks.
"Her mom and I are business partners," I explained.
"Yeah, and he's my big brothers' dad," she added.
They just stared harder.
Then Cathy came over to say hello, give me a hug and kiss, and
meet the new guys.
Trying to behave, I started with a Virgin Mary, had a ham and
cheese omelette, hash brown casseroles, and a blueberry waffle.
I splurged just a bit for the thick cut, peppered bacon. At my
urging, the other guys followed Marcus example and ate like
lean, healthy young men should. They all had something
different, and they all assured me it was excellent. I think it
shocked them when Ms. Acosta came out to see what we thought,
and to thank us for being there.
Cathy tells me that there were people waiting when we opened at
6am, that the drive through coffee area stayed busy for a solid
two hours, and that we opened the buffet area during lunch, and
we were still packed. I might be going out on a limb with this
guess, but I think the advertising worked.

Great that the advertising work!
I hope that everyday the Continental has more and more
customers.
It is good that Crystal is no longer in love with Van!!
thanks for sharing

One of the advertisements we sent out for the Continental was
after we decided to add the drive-through, which was pretty
close to a last minute decision.
Dozens of Drinks!
Dozens of Pastries
Over 1,000 types of breakfast Burritos
and More than 20,000 Breakfast Sandwiches!
We Serve What You Want
and technically it's true. We over 9 types of bread, 5 types of
'meat', 8 ways to have your egg, 7 types of cheese, and 5
condiments, and you can always order with double meat or double
cheese, which gives you something like 60, 480 options or
something like that.
Cathy says the person taking the order usually asks 'which
bread? which meat, which cheese, how would you like your egg,
would you like any condiments?' then finishes the order.
However, some people had apparently studied the menu, because a
few people were apparently able to reel off their order without
pause.
The drive through has been busy enough that Cathy had to send a
couple of bus boys out to take orders from anyone who hadn't
reached the menu, but who just wanted coffee and pastry, and the
other was running order and money back and forth. We had to put
cones down to re-route things a bit, because some cars were
backing up onto the street.
That's a good problem to have.
Apparently the drive-thru is being busy first thing in the
morning, at lunch, and then for about 90 minutes, starting
around 5:15.

I so love Brussel Sprouts. I hated them as a kid, but somewhere
along the way they have become my favorite green veggie. Melt a
little cheese on them, and they are the most delicious things.

I'm glad the new business is doing well. Sometimes it's
difficult at the beginning to find clients, until people get to
know it.

While the profit sharing is going to be low for this quarter,
it's much easier to find customers when you can afford good
advertising. We're also on a major street that feeds onto the
highway, so I think a lot of our business is people who've been
passing us as we got ready to open, and are just wanting to try
something different as they head to work.
The real question is how long before it starts calming down.

Just thought I should mention that the Grand Opening went great
yesterday. We had a good turn out for the ceremony, and we
treated the 'dignitaries' to a free lunch, which they all claim
they enjoyed a lot.
Cathy says it's been a very busy week, and she's hoping for a
busier weekend, but it looks like we're off to a good start.
