22 April 2018 - Sunday Morning with my Boys

Marcia one time called my house a pig sty. Since I keep the
house very neatly (well, the weekly maid service does
       anyway...), I protested.
"No," she replied, "Not because it's messy, because you have so
       many hams living here."
       She has a point.
Some Saturday and Sunday mornings, we have a family breakfast
planned ahead, and everyone has to be up for it (though we do
schedule it much later than on a school day). Other weekends,
it's catch as catch can. Usually we have a breakfast buffet
type situation - we always have cereal (hot and cold), English
muffins, bagels, bread for toast, and I usually keep around
other muffins (blueberry, banana nut, etc). Sometimes I'll make
waffle batter or biscuits. Other times we have Eggos and frozen
hash browns. There are always eggs and breakfast meats, and if
you're lazy, sometimes there's someone to cook for you. While
Connor's getting old/big enough to do some cooking on his own,
I'm still not comfortable with Curtis using the stove top, so I
usually cater to them or make sure someone does (I've always
loved breakfast and considered it important, so while I'll let
someone have a cold sandwich for lunch, I tend to indulge for
       breakfast).
There's a local radio show on a college station. I'm really too
far to get a good signal, but you can listen to it online. It's
called Curtain's Up, and it's a Broadway music show. I used to
listen to it all the time before Ryan went off to school - well,
he and I used to listen to it together. In the past few weeks,
it was on my mind, and I thought to tune into it today. They
were doing tunes from shows that appeared at the Majestic
Theater. One of those shows was The Music Man.
It was about 9:30 and Liam and Kaden had wandered in. Connor
and Curtis decided they needed topping off again, so they came
in to nibble. Kenny had cooked for him and Colt and Devon, and
the other two were cleaning up, while Ken talked to them.
And then the radio started playing 76 Trombones.
C&C were marching all around the kitchen, alternately swinging
their arms and acting like they were playing a trombone. Then
Kenny started acting like a drum major. After the song
finished, C&C wanted to know why Kenny had been doing that, then
we all started trying to figure out exactly what a drum major is
and how one becomes one. We talked to Ethan. We called Johnny.
He checked with a friend of his. So did Bruce, after Ethan
asked him. We looked it up on line.
We're still not sure exactly how one becomes a drum major, but
Connor now insists he wants to learn an instrument that's in the
       marching band.

One way to become a Drum Major is by being assigned the
position. When my dad was stationed at the Marine Corps
Barracks in Norfolk, Virginia, that was one of his assignments.
Now my dad couldn't play any instruments and was basically tone
deaf. But every weekend he would pack all of us kids in the
station wagon and we would go on base and watch him prance out
front of the Marine Corps Band on parade. He did a great job of
throwing that long staff into the air and catching it. I have
some of the old photo's of him leading the parade.
