       New BOTD Policy
By: Jack Date: April 15, 2018, 3:50 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
We have had a recurring problem the last nine months or so with
losing pictures we use for the BOTD scenarios and elsewhere.
Unfortunately, while we know that we have had several accounts
cancelled, we don't know why they cancelled them. Was it
because there was a copyright complaint, because they simply saw
a copyright, or did someone see the BOTD and not like the way we
were using them? We just don't know.
Because of that, I'm considering limiting the time the BOTD's
stay posted. It's possible for me to set a format so that posts
are deleted after a certain amount of time with no posts. I'm
hoping that limiting the number of pictures we have at any one
time might reduce the attention we draw and allow us to keep
       things going longer.
If anyone has thoughts or opinions on this, please let us hear
       from you.

Not sure how helpful this but here is a thought.
While the pictures certainly add some flavour and an extra
dimension to the BOTD scenario the picture is not always
essential for it to make sense. "Do Golden Arches Result in
Grilled Buns?" is an example where the scenario is built around
the picture but most of the rest recent BOTDs would work without
the picture. So perhaps rather than limit the time the BOTDs
stay on the forum just remove the pictures rather the whole
thread if the picture is not critical?

I have to agree with Zac.
I find that my most creative thinking to create BOTD scenarios
has occurred without looking at any pictures. In fact, when I
have looked at any particular picture, it acted to lock-in my
thinking to the situation that I seemed to have seen, rather
than expanded my thought processes. So, I actually try to avoid
going through the pictures in order to let my mind do more
roaming. I thank Zac for letting me now think that I am perhaps
not quite so unique that I don't find pictures to be that
       helpful.

It would be nice if the photos could disappear after a certain
amount of time with no hits, leaving the text of the BOTD as is
       but without the photo.

Or just do BOTDs with no pictures.

I think the pictures are important.
But, I have an idea: what if the picture was done as the first
reply to the BOTD? That way a moderator could then go back
after replies stopped and simply delete that reply.

The BOTDs that I submit are virtually always based on a pic
where the subject is doing something rather than just a simple
portrait. Thus for me no pictures would equal no BOTDs.
Apart from that I consider that the pic does make the BOTD come
alive in a way that a simple scenario would not.

As a reader/responder, I don't feel like the pictures are very
important. My answers are pretty much text-based. I don't know
how those who make BOTD's feel about the pictures though. If the
usual BOTD makers need them simply as prompts, perhaps the
pictures could just be e-mailed to them as a group?
I like David's solution. I hope we don't decide to delete the
BOTD's because there are some which are fun to re-read or
revisit after a while. (There are also some RL BOTD's which
contribute to the on-going "stories"/bios of Jack's kids.)
Perhaps we could simply include a link to the picture instead of
embedding it in the post? I'm not sure if that would be a
       violation of copyright or not.

Thanks to a lot of hard work and time from Adric and Jack we now
have a collection of "safe" pictures that should get us through
       for a while.
