Bartholomew Allen 'Barry' Wells
By: Jack Date: April 5, 2018, 5:42 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Most of you probably know that Barry is my only biological
child. His mother and I were actually in the process of
separating when we found out she was pregnant. I stayed with
her to help with the pregnancy, putting a bed in my office, so
we each had our own space. Barry was born in March of 1997, and
I stayed until the first of Oct, when we were sure he was going
to regularly sleep through the night.
Though we had a pre-nup, I left that house to his mom (she still
lives there, with her new husband and their teenage daughter),
and it's not far from where my brother lives. Until he left for
college, Barry had never lived more than a few blocks from
either parent, no matter which with which of us he was staying.
Cathy and I had a timeline loosely agreed on, but Barry grew up
with the twins, and the two of them have always been best
friends. When Bryce moved in with us (when the twins were 7 and
Barry was 8), he became part of the group. As the grew older,
Barry spent more and more time here, until Cathy allowed him to
move in (before our agreed on schedule, and it was her own
suggestion, as far as I know). As I recall, he moved in with us
in the summer of 2007. However, Corey (his biological
half-brother) graduated high school in 2008 and went off to
college. Despite having Crystal, his mom was obviously stressed
by having all her boys out of the house, so Barry and I agreed
that maybe he should move back with her. He did, though he was
still over here on a very regular basis. However, that didn't
long, as Noah arrived on our doorstep a few months after that.
While Bryce and the twins are Barry's lifelong best friends,
Noah is more than that. They're only six months apart in age,
and while Noah is a bit bigger, everyone that meets them now
seems to just assume their paternal twins.
I decided to post this this week because Barry just celebrated
his 21st birthday last Friday, and there were questions about if
he came home.
No, he didn't.
Barry had been up here over part of Spring Break at the first of
the month, and then they came back for my surprise party, which
had just been the week before. Instead of making the trip yet
again, he decided he could just call his mom and I (and to be
fair, he had spent time with each of us when he was here those
previous two times, so we'd already seen him a lot more than we
do in an average month).
I did send a bit of extra money to the boys for his birthday.
Being that his best friends - Johnny, Josh, and Bryce - are
younger than him, he refused his friends invitations to go party
all weekend. Instead, the three of them, along with Noah, Blake
Cavanaugh, and a couple of their school friends, took Barry out
for dinner at some BBQ place they love, then they went to see
Ready Player One.
When they got back to the dorms... Then his older friends took
him out and got him drunk at a titty bar. At least they
promised me they were ubering home.

Sometimes I loose track of how long it's been since I talked
about the college boys. Of course, they're not here that much,
they don't require individual attention (though I still try to
give it to them, of course), and they don't get in much trouble.
Normally, when something does happen - it's to a group of them,
so that's how it ends up getting reported... Like when a big
group of them were drinking while I wasn't home, and had
supplied beer to some of their friends who were still a bit shy
of the drinking age, as well as having glass bottles by the
pool. I seem to recall Barry was part of the mass paddling that
occurred after that incident, but it was reported in it's own
thread (actually a BOTD Extra, I believe).
Anyway, it's hard to believe, but Barry is 22 years old. When I
started this forum, back in Jan '09, he was 12 years old. Like
most of my family, he was a fairly early bloomer, so he wasn't
exactly small, but he was far from the 6'1" he ended up.
He had planned on graduating last spring, and was actually on
schedule to do that, but he decided to change concentrations at
close to the last minute. He had been majoring in programming
and software design, but decided he wanted... well, he's
actually not changing so much, as adding some classes in
cybersecurity. It's not a huge change, but he needs to take a
couple of classes he wasn't able to get last year, so he's going
to go this fall semester, and should graduate in December.
