Surprise!
By: Jack Date: March 25, 2018, 5:42 am

Yesterday, while talking about Adam's birthday, I said this.
[quote author=Jack link=topic=474.msg4625#msg4625

It's the first really warm day we've had in a while. Marcus and
Chris and Steve are all here (with their kids), and they
encouraged me to go take my meds and lie down for a while.
Since my knee's bothering me a bit, I decided I could at least
sit down, and I might stretch out and read in a bit.
[/quote]
I thought about posting more, but my knee was a bit sore, and my
BP meds were kicking in (and I was re-reading Ready Player One
before the movie releases next weekend), so I went to my room,
stretched out, read and read for a while. I posted at 3:19,
which was a little late to nap, but Cleo and Sheba joined me,
and we enjoyed some quiet time (and George and Gracie used my
bed as a wrestling ring). About 4pm, Emmet stuck his head in my
bedroom door, knocking on the frame.
"Hey, Popop. Marcus wants me to ask if you can come talk to
somebody."
Emmet had no idea who, so I got up, washed my face, stepped back
into my shoes, and headed towards the backyard.
I probably should have known something was going on when someone
put Ummagumma on in the living room not long after I'd gone to
my room, but I was just enjoying it.
Let's skip the details and say that over 200 people showed up
for my surprise party.
Pink Floyd had been used to cover the sound of them bringing in
the port-a-potties and extra equipment and setting up the second
tent (we'd had one for Adam's birthday, in case it was too
windy). Everyone who attends the tribal Christmas party was
there. Pretty much all my family was there, including Darren
from Fort Worth and Andy from Wichita Falls. JD is on shipboard
duty right now, and Bobby and Cal had both had games, but
everyone else had made it, including Charlie (he took a
commercial flight to be sure he made it here and back on time).
Mickey, Greg, and John all came, along with my more local
college boys. Barrett came down with Drake and Ed. The stores
were left on skeleton crews yesterday evening, and many of my
employees were there. Several teachers, including Mr. P were
there. A lot of my students were there.
Brian Perez was there. He apologized, but said Dean and Gary
pretty much made him come. I assured him that if I hadn't liked
him and wanted him around, I would have just called the cops and
not wasted time on him. The expression on his face said he
wasn't quite sure how to take that (maybe when he forgets how
bad his butt hurt last week).
They were grilling burgers, dawgs, chicken, eggplant, and
mushrooms. They did a crawfish boil. They brought in pizza and
fried chicken. Kathy used the ovens at the Berry Patch to do
appetizers.
They had cards, dominoes, and board games set up in the tents
(Hey, it was a party for me).
The Phantoms played - including Happy Birthday.
Van made me sing karaoke.
We met some new neighbors from a couple of blocks over (they
thought it was a block party and came to check it out).
It was wild and fun and I had a great time. I do feel a little
dense. I know understand why Daniel, Ryan, and Chris all
suddenly were interested in how I handled the tents for the
Christmas parties and all the permits and stuff for the block
parties. Things Mickey said to me when we were talking about
him coming home for Van's 16th bday last month suddenly make
sense. The way a couple of conversations just stopped when I
came up suddenly make me feel less paranoid (you're not paranoid
if they really are talking about you).
No one will admit who the organizer was, but they did a great
job. This is the first time someone tried to give me a surprise
party and managed it.

Happy birthday Jack! That sounds like a really great day. I’m
glad so many of your guys got to come home and they were able to
surprise you. I love that the neighbors thought it was a block
party!

And they did it with you right there in the house. Are you sure
someone didn't slip you a Mickey Finn?" Was Doctor Sammy there?
Just saying, you were right there and they had trucks pulling
in and out, and tent stakes being hammered into the ground and
200 people with all their talking and you didn't hear anything?
LOLOLOLOL.

HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY JACK
Aww how sweet of all your boys throwing you a surprise birthday
party... I bet they really had to work for it too...
I’d say it was probably your oldest ones that really got the
balls going but I’d bet they all had a part... sounds like it
was a success and all had fun.....

To be clear, my bedroom is on the far side of the house from the
park, and the living room is directly between us, so I had the
entire house and Pink Floyd playing loudly between us. Not all
the people arrived before four pm, so it's not like I was
entirely oblivious.

Yes, it was - and I was a bit shocked by some of the people
there, like Mr. and Mrs. Strouse and Mrs. Tidwell. If I'm not
universally loved, at least I'm appreciated.

A few suggestions were made, but most of them remember exactly
how practiced I am at carrying a grudge, and all of them have
birthdays coming in the next 364 days. I did give in and let
the littles do it.

I know they're involved, and I suppose I could check the rental
agreements at permits to find out who signed them. Judging by
the nervous look on Josh's face when I was making threats, it
wasn't just the kids who were involved.

Yes, I did - I did very much.

What a cheat! You got the little ones to give you your birthday
spanking. I hope they used a paddle at least! :P
