Dennis and Barbara McLeod and Family - Patrick (12), Sean (9), a
nd Colin (8)
By: Jack Date: March 21, 2018, 4:37 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Pronounced: Mac Loud or Mac Cloud
I met the family yesterday. The family has just moved to
Bransom, and Dennis is going to be homeschooling for at least
the rest of this year. The kids were tested at some point, and
none of them are on grade level right now.
Dennis lost his left leg below the knee in some kind of
accident. While he didn't say much about it, it sounds like
someone was, at minimum, careless, because he received a
settlement that left them - in his words - 'comfortable enough',
though Barbara is still working. The thing is, he's from Texas
originally, and when he no longer had to work (for a while - he
says he'll probably go back to doing something, when he gets
used to moving around better), and he's been wanting to come
back here. While he's from the area south of Dallas, they ended
up deciding to come here.
Patrick's pretty cute in an average sort of way. He has hair
that I think is light brown (though it could be dark blond) that
he wears parted, with bangs sweeping over his forehead. I'm
surprised that he doesn't have freckles, but his skin is pretty
clear. He has very nice greenish-blue eyes. He's very small
(just turned 12, if I understood right - he was in 6th grade) -
maybe 4'7" and 65 pounds or so - very lean, but he was wearing
shorts and it looks like he has a nice little rear.
Sean and Colin are almost the same size, maybe 4' 3" or 4"
inches and a lean, but a bit more filled out that Pat. Sean is
very pretty though, with black hair and green eyes. Colin also
has green eyes, but his hair is what I'd call auburn, though a
bit more red than Noah's. They are in 2nd and 3rd grade.
Since he's at home, Dennis is going to be homeschooling the
boys, which is why we were meeting. We met at the Campus store
(I still have an office there, and it's still my favorite
store). While Dennis and I were talking, he told the boys they
could each pick out one (count 'em Jim - one!) action figure.
They ended up leaving with one action figure, several comics,
and some trading cards. Of course, it turns out he used to be a
comics fan, but quit collecting a long time ago. He left with
several books himself.
His intention is to work to get the boys up to grade level,
especially in reading and math. The home school association had
helped him find science, math, and social studies that he liked,
but he was recommended to talk to me about Language Arts. We
talked for a while, and the five of us ended up taking a trip to
Barnes and Nobles. They haven't read the Percy Jackson books,
so he picked up Lightning Thief for them to read aloud, and then
he got a couple of books for each boys. I e-mailed him the work
list I used for grammar (with the Mad Scientist Club), so he
could see how we did it.
We ended up over here, where the boys were ecstatic to play with
the puppies. Fido got very offended that the boys wouldn't pay
attention to them. I have to find a way to get that rabbit to
stop hitting people. He doesn't do it especially hard, but it's
rude.
I invited them to stay and meet the boys, but they had an
appointment with Dr. Sammy. Pat is on Adderall, and they're
talking about reducing or eliminating his dose while he's out of
school. Also, Sean has some allergies, so they need to see a
doctor to get their prescriptions.
"I hope his listening thing isn't cold," Colin said.
"I hope his office isn't cold," Pat replied. "We probably gotta
take our clothes off and get a whole check out and everything."
"Check up," their dad corrected.
The boys did play for a while, and Dennis and I talked. I
invited them to come over Saturday afternoon. It's supposed to
be a bit cloudy and windy, but very nice and warm, so we're
hoping to have Adam's birthday party outside, and I'm sure he
won't mind a couple of more guests just because he hasn't met
them yet. They'll also be coming back on Monday to see about
Scouts.
The subject of spanking didn't really come up, but when I served
us drinks, Dennis saw the paddle in the kitchen and pointed it
out to the boys. He was laughing, and they kind of laughed, but
Sean and Colin both rubed their rears for a moment, which could
have just been joking, but....

So the boys probably think they shouldn't get spanked, and their
father probably thinks they should. ;D

:o Oh, no! Poor Fido! Such an extraordinary rabbit and they
ignore him. No wonder he hit them. ;D
Pity about the father's accident, but they sound like a nice
family.
How come they had an appointment with Dr. Sammy? Did you
recommend him or just a coincidence?

Cute! Stethoscope, Colin. :)

Sounds like an interesting and fun family. :)
MacLeod is a strong old Scottish family. I am clan Gunn myself.
Think of the movie. "The Highlander." Main Character was
Connor MacLeod. I am thinking the boys can tell people that he
is their great great, great grandfather. ::) ;D ;D
Although there is a line of MacLeoid that is Irish. (With the
added "I" in the name.) I am 1/4 Irish also.
We are commonly known as Scots-Irish. Some will use,
Scotch-Irish.
I can imagine after they catch up with their schooling using
Homeschool, if they go to a regular school, they will have fun
teaching people how to pronounce their last name, since it isn't
pronounced like it is spelled, unless you have the accent.
I'm just rattling on. Wanted to post a comment.

Total coincidence. They needed a doctor to handle the
prescriptions, and Sam is accepting new patients right now.

They seem like it so far. They liked the house when they were
here Tuesday. They'll be back this afternoon, so I can give
them the tour. Perry's going to bring Bo and Royce over to meet
them as well. And then we'll see how they like the house when
it's full.

I'm also a quarter Irish and a quarter Scots. My maternal
grandfather's parents came here from Scotland (his oldest sister
was born there), and my paternal grandmother is Scots and met my
grandfather when he was in Britain after the war. (The rest is
1/4 German - my maternal grandmother's parents - 3/8ths Welsh
(which is where 'Wells' comes from, though it was changed from
Llewellyn when my Great, great grandfather immigrated) and
1/16th Apache.)

Actually, it'll only matter with the teacher. The other kids
probably won't see it written down very often. They'll just
hear the teachers (and the kids themselves maybe) pronouncing
it. It'll probably confuse them when they do see it written
down.
And thanks for commenting - I don't mind a little stream of
conscious, but having comments to read when I come back always
gives me more energy and enthusiasm to write.

What does Fido do to hit them, just swipe them with his paw?
He do this if the other pets are getting attention and no one is
paying any mind to Fido?

Usually there are a lot more kids around. He's used to everyone
saying hello to him when they get home, so just having a few new
kids, who were ignoring him and fawning over Rusti and Rascal,
was insulting, I think. Sometimes rabbit psychology can be hard
to read.
[hr]
I still haven't met Barbara (she's coming Saturday), but the
other four family members were here. Perry met them, but he had
homework to do, so he retired to the dining room to spread out a
bit. Bo and Royce showed the MacLeods around, while Dennis and
I discussed Scouts and books. I showed Dennis the playroom and
boys bedroom, and he asked about the paddles. Not only does
he spank, but Pat got one this morning - it seems he's been
picking on his little brothers some, and he let Dad catch him
one time too often. No details on how it's done, but he likes
the idea of the Spanky Bears.
We also talked comics a bit. I let him borrow a couple of the
DC Rebirth collections the other day, and he wants to start
reading them.
I think that's about it. They did get to meet my kids this
afternoon, and they seemed to get along just fine.
