Which is my long way of saying, Gary was probably as embarrassed
       as Brian was.

I did sort of wonder about that also. It is uncomfortable
having someone strip off in front of you. In this day and age,
       even more so.

Dean's an old fashioned guy, and it doesn't bother him. Doug
spent his most formative years in my house, so I'm sure he's
dealing with it just fine. Plus, he's much younger, so he and
       Brian are closer to peers.

date=1521725931]He was a cute little 8 year old black boy. He
took it because he didn't have any canteen money and felt left
out during canteen time. Unfortunately he didn't get a second
chance. Camp rules, once I discovered him, the Director called
his parents to come and get him.
I felt worse than he did I think. That was my first year of
being a cabin counselor. But I learned from that. I purchased
a canteen ticket and during canteen time, I looked to see who
wasn't getting anything and offered my card for them to go and
get something. Before that incident I never thought about some
kids not have any spending money with them. Live and learn.

Aww, what a pity it couldn't be solved like in a spanking story,
with a spanking and later giving him some pocket money so that
       he wouldn't feel left out.
Nice what you did for other boys in the same situation, though.
       :)

It's been over a month now, so I wanted to update a few things.
       1) Brian and his parents joined us at the Avengers showing last
night, and they met us beforehand for pizza.
       2) Mr. Perez had Brian go through and pull all the comics he
thinks he might have stolen from the store. They then added
them up, and Mr. P approached me with a suggestion. He has put
this books aside for now, and there's a piece of paper taped to
the top of it, with the total value, plus tax. Then the two of
them made a budget for Brian.
Mr. Perez wanted Brian to work 40 hour weeks until he had the
debt paid off. I balked at that. Not that I can't use him that
much, and I understand he's being punished, but this is summer,
and he should have a bit more free time than that. We talked it
out, and Brian will be working four days a week, then he can go
into the warehouse, for up to another 8 hours, if we have work
there which needs to be done.
       3) His parents have completely ungrounded him now.
       4) Brian has been spending more time here with Parker and Leif,
but he's also become pretty good friends with Liam and Kaden,
and I think he and Van have bonded a bit over music and pets.
He's an only child, and he loves C&C. He will be over here a
       lot this summer.
His friends pretty much know more or less what happened to him
that first night here. Apparently they've talked a bit. He
asked his dad to give me permission to treat him like 'one of
the guys'. While I'm not going to paddle a boy his age often,
he sat down with Liam, Parker, and me, and we gave him a list of
rules. Basically it boils down to
       1) Rules for the Pool
       2) Respect everyone, their property, and their personal space.
       a) Clean up after yourself.
       b) Don't go into someone's room or use their stuff without
       permission.
       c) If both people don't think it's funny, it's not joking
       - it's bullying.
       3) Speak politely when in public.
       4) Say hello, and let me know when you're leaving.
       5) If you're staying here, then my curfew apples to you.
Of course, some of them are a bit more complicated than that,
but it's the basics. For the most part, I'd warn just about
anyone for a first offense anyway.
Overall, things seem to have worked out with him. He's been
working in the warehouse for a full month now, and I've told
Dean and the boys he doesn't have to be searched anymore, though
he should still turn his car keys in before his shift. There's
about a month left in school, and not quite that much time left
in baseball season. I think I'm going to let him go back to
work in the stores once school ends. We'll see how he does.

It sounds like you did him the biggest favor of his life, and it
also sounds like he will be repaying your for it appropriately
(and not in just cash or labor). He's a very lucky young man.

       It certainly shouldn't have been.
The fact is that everyone makes mistakes. While there comes a
point where you have to move harshly to either stop those
mistakes or keep them from harming others, it's my belief that,
over the last 40 or 50 years, our society has become much more
concerned with condemning and punishing people than it has with
helping and rehabilitating them, and we're certainly working to
do it at way too young an age.
Brian did pay a harsh penalty for what he did, but by doing
that, I feel he earned a second chance, and he seems to have
learned and be making a real use of that. It seems to me that's
just the way things should be, if everyone would just try.

I think the way this has turned out speaks very highly of
everyone involved, particularly Brian. To accept that
punishment and then move on from there to a situation where he
wants to associate with you and your family and asks Mr. Perez
to give you permission to treat him as one of your own shows
       real character.
