I had him kneel down next to me, I put my arm around his
shoulders, and we talked a bit, but I wasn't going to change my
mind. We talked about what he did and why, and I apologized for
not catching it sooner, before it got more serious, but he
finally admitted he'd earned a pretty serious session. He stood
up, lifted his shirt again, and came out of his pants and
boxers, then went over my lap.

I like it that you took the time to explain and calm him down a
bit. Panic can make a punishment seem worse than it is, so a bit
of reassurance can help a lot.

I learned a lot from my parents - mostly in how not to do
things. The worst problem I see with spanking is that it drives
a kid to extremes. Spankings are scary, and they break one down
emotionally. If you're unfair to a kid and yell at him, it will
be very negative. If you are understanding and supportive,
he'll come out of it in better shape.
