Charlie (A Mr. Anderson story) by Skip Trace and Jack Wells
By: Jack Date: December 16, 2025, 10:07 am
---------------------------------------------------------
This story has been in the works for quite a while. Early this
year, while I was in my manic writing period, I developed a real
love for Jeff Anderson and Caleb Stiles (you might have noticed
my 13 part celebration of that youngster). Skip and I had
already been conversing after I read one of his Christmas
stories (Angels and Devils, which was set in Dallas, and I was
trying to deduce the mall in the story).
After reading the entire Mr. Anderson Looks Back (and Caleb at
least twice) and discussing it with Skip, I wrote some fanfic
about Caleb, then Mr. Anderson. The first one was based on
Skip's original inspiration for Caleb, and is no longer
possible, since Caleb Looks Back (with Skip's permission) took
Caleb in a different direction, It's the other story that's
important now.
I wrote, simply as something for Skip to appreciate, a 14 page
treatment that mixed actual story with quick descriptions of
entire scenes. To be honest, it was a self-insert story, and
Charlie is very much based on me at that age. I enjoyed writing
it and hoped he would enjoy reading it.
He loved it.
He loved it so much that he encouraged me to expand it into an
entire series. I refused. I refused because I was afraid I
wouldn't get Mr. Anderson's voice correct. Instead, Skip agreed
to co-author it, though he put a huge amount of work into
expanding and developing my original ideas.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the final result as much as I did.

This collaboration is a really excellent continuation of a
series that Skip started years ago. I've been a fan of that
series since it started, and now with Jack's contribution it is
even more appealing. I loved the school-related scenes
described from teachers' perspectives and the relationship that
develops between Mr. Anderson's family and Charlie. Great read
so far, and I'm looking forward to reading more.

I so loved the original serries, and am so far loving this one.
I can't wait for the next chapter.

It is more of the same, which in this case is a GOOD thing.

We had one feedback on part 1 that was basically complaining
about too much detail. To me, it's the quotidian details that
make a story like this. It's easy to write a wham, bam. thank
you, sir story (but even then, not always able to do it well),
to me, it's the details Skip put into developing the situation,
the characters, and the budding relationship that really make me
invested in the story.
Spoilers incoming for Part 1.
I believe it was W.H. Auden who first said 'thou shalt not read
the Bible for it's prose.' Likewise, I doubt many people go to
MMSA seeking high literature. Yet to me, while the spankings
and paddlings are excited, I'm really moved by a man traumatized
by loss, who's still been putting one foot in front of the
other, yet who still hasn't recovered from it. Not completely.
Reminds me of a song from Garth Brooks Ropin' the Wind album -
What She's Doing Now. So yeah, I guess if all you want is for
some kid to get paddled so you can get your rocks off, that kind
of thing gets in the way. To me, that's the kind of detail that
makes the story.

Which is why I search out your stories, and Danny's, and a
number of others and scroll on by 90+% of what I perceive to be
junk on the forum. Keep writing the way you do.

BIG OL' HONKING SPOILERS FOR PART 4
When I wrote the treatment for this story, I knew it couldn't
just be the same thing Caleb had been. There had to be a reason
for this to exist, to be worth reading as it's own animal. I
don't remember the exact timeline (in RL), but I'd been looking
at the timeline for Mr. Anderson, and I had the idea of why
someone would be important enough for Jeff to write about, but
not be included as someone for Travis to name his kid after
(after whom for Travis to name his kid?). I was already looking
at this as a self-insert story, where someone like me found the
help they needed at a time it could have made a huge
difference). Then it clicked at how that could work with what
Skip had already done.
Skip said it's that final link back to the previous stories that
really convinced him to do this story.
It's been a long road, and there have been a lot of changes for
both Skip and myself. He did a huge amount of work turning my
original treatment into a real story, and at the same time, he
did a lot to make me understand why I always loved Ordinary
People so much. It was a privilege to play in his sandbox
again, so thanks to him and thanks to all of you who took the
time to read it. Hope it was as good for you as it was for me.

You can hardly ever have too much detail. It's the detail that
defines the story.

I want plot! There has to be a story. Not just a description
of a spanking. Heck, you can just mention that a spanking took
place and I am fine. Plot! Plot! Plot! It's the story I am
interested in.

I just finished reading the final chapter. I can hardly see for
the tears in my eyes.
I am so sad the series is done, so happy with the ending, and so
impressed by the magnificent story you created. Not a spanking
story or stories--but literature every bit as good as "Ordinary
People" (the film and novel of which I will now have to
revisit).

Thanks, Adric, Zyngaru, and Kier! Your kind words are greatly
appreciated! After the “too much detail” feedback, and with the
post-writing letdown particularly acute after finishing a story
that has been in the works since February, I was a little
discouraged. (It’s possible I texted Jack to say, “Well, as long
as the two of us are happy with it…”) It is reassuring that the
three of you enjoyed it too. (“For discriminating tastes…” :) )
Special thanks to Adric for editing and David M. Katz for
expediting the review and posting of the four-part story.
Extra special thanks to Jack for a wonderful idea and the
14-page treatment he mentioned, most of which is word-for-word
in the final story. My most recent Anderson story was originally
written in 2017, and I really thought I was done. Without Jack’s
inspiration and enthusiasm, this story would not have happened.
