What is this? Why does it exist? Who is Tom?
[/quote]
A few years ago during one of Flag's long absences there was a
danger the forum would close. Johnno created the forum as a back
up. Tom is probably Johnno.

The message has now changed to:
Thank you for visiting the New MMSA Forum.
The forum is currently unavailable and likely to stay that way
for technical reasons, partly due to heavy traffic from bots or
other bad actors destabilising our server.
More information may be available to authors shortly if you log
in and visit this page. We apologise for the outtage which we
know affects your ability to manage your stories, and we know
the social value of the forum to many of you. Be assured that
alternative arrangements are being planned.
That is more reassuring for forum members.

should we be encouraging people to post in this forum or in the
back-up forum started a few years ago:

Any answer, YES vs. NO, on whether any of us should try checking
out the backup forum linked above? If only for curiosity's
sake...

If we had an idea of when the new forum is going to appear it
would be easier to answer the the question. I suggest we wait to
the New Year and then think about whether the back-up forum is
publicised.

I have just received a message from Zonka on King's Dungeons
about the possibility of an alternative temporary MMSA forum. It
was he who opened the forum i referred to above. This is what i
wrote in reply:
I always thought that it was Johnno who opened the forum,
possibly because it was he who informed me of its existence.
Anyway, as you say, it is still operational and I have just
posted a reply to your message. If we are to have an alternative
it makes sense to use a forum which is up and running.
The MMSA forum has been down for nearly two months now and I
think it has got to the stage where we are justified in making
alternative temporary arrangements. If Flag has real life issues
preventing him from setting up a new forum we can all accept
that, but it should not stop us from having a place where we can
meet until he can give the matter his full attention.
The question is how to communicate to everyone that the
alternative exists. It has already been made known in Jack's
House and can be published in King's Dungeons. Apart from that,
those who network widely can inform their contacts by email.

I have now learned that Flag has said that he does not want a
temporary forum because it will prejudice the security of the
new forum which will not be open to the public. He says that
users of the temporary forum will be tempted to give out the URL
of the new forum on the temporary forum. That does not sound
very convincing to me given that there are various other outlets
on which the URL could be made known. However, mindful of all
the hard work Flag has put in over the years, I am happy to
respect his wishes.
There does though have to be a limit. We had a forum where, over
some 20 years, a community was built of those with an interest
in common who enjoyed participating. All the regulars must be
missing it, some more than others, perhaps even feeling that
they have been deprived of a safe haven. At what point should we
say that we cannot wait any longer to get together again? Will
this thread still be relevant at Easter?

Personally, I've got used to life without the Mmsa forum. When
it's restored I'll use it. In the meantime, however long, its
absence won't trouble me much.
An alternative site would not entice me because it would not
have a direct connection with Mmsa and its readers and authors.
The connection was of the essence of the lapsed forum.
