Mickey Wells

Mickey or Misha Wells, also known as Mikhail Iosovitch Wells or
Mikhail Timofeyevitch Wells. His legal, middle name is Iosovich,
but his step/adoptive father was named Timothy. He was very
close with his step-father.
For those of you who don't know, when Mickey was 12 and Van was
5, there was a house fire. It apparently started at the
Christmas tree, which was close to their parents room. Their
parents died of smoke inhalation without waking, but the alarm
woke Mickey, and he saved a photo album, their cat, Cepo, and
Van. Even back then, Mickey slept unclothed, so he was outside,
naked, watching his house burn down.
Maggie was called about them, and she looked at the cat, then
called me.
The rest is history.
Mickey kind of got mad at me today, though he's the one who
called.
"Dad, I was hoping to come home the next month for Van's
birthday."
"That'd be great."
"Well, you know... It's his sixteenth birthday...."
"I know, Mick. You don't have to explain to me. We'd be happy
to see you."
"Yeah, but.... the thing is... I'm not going to be able to save
the money."
"Excuse me."
"I've been trying to save up, but after Christmas and
everything, and.... I'm not going to be able to save the money."
I was quiet for a moment or two."
"Mikhail Iosovich, I understand that you love Tim - that you
still love him and see him as your father - your real father.
I've always known that, and I've never resented it. But let me
tell you something: you are my son. I love you. You and I might
not be as close friends as I am with some of the boys, but I
love you as much as any of them - even Barry. If you want to
come home for Van's birthday, then you will. Just ask. You
can't take advantage of me, Mickey. You're my son. Everything
I have is yours."
I don't know if he took the approach he did because he didn't
want to ask, or if he honestly thought I'd begrudge it, but it
had hurt, and I think that was plain in my voice. As I wrapped
up, I could hear him sob on the other end, so I made myself
lighten up.
"Of course, your brothers all have their share, so I guess you
could take advantage of them."
He was still pretty sobby, but I got a laugh.
So, I gave Mick permission to use his emergency credit card, and
he's going to be home to celebrate his little brother's 16th
birthday with us.

It is good that Mickey will be there for Van's birthday.
The shocking part of all of this is that Van is 16. :o

The shocking part is that it was January of '08 when Van and
Misha moved in with us.
I can still remember the two of them pecking at food, and then
Mickey sitting by the tub while I bathed Van, and got him into a
pair of Bryce's old pajamas I managed to find. I almost had to
fight to make Mickey shower, before I finally tucked the two of
them into bed together (with Cepo in the room, with his own
food, water, and liter box, because he kept growling at all the
other animals smells).
Now here Van is, nearly as tall as I am - taller than Mickey
now. He took over, developed and ran that charity concert - not
just playing keyboards, but organizing the shower, shuffling the
performances, dancing, singing, and hosting, and he did it while
showing consideration for other cultures.
All that and he's still painting and doing extra school work
online.
And it's not just Van. Mickey might not be quite as impressive
as his little brother, but he is attending one of the top
schools in the world, and making great grades while holding a
double major. While he didn't make the team, he did try out for
the university baseball team, and he still makes time to ump and
to play on his own.
So yeah, I'm shocked at how fast the time seems to have gone by,
but I'm damned proud, too.

Aww, Mickey is one of my favorites among your kids. I hope you
get to spend some one-on-one together while he's home for Van's
birthday. Or that he and Van do. :) Your whole conversation with
him reminds me of when he not-so-directly asked you to go to
college orientation with him.
Anyway, what you told him was really very sweet. :)
By the way, what's Mickey's double major? He started out with
Russian Studies, right? Or something like that?

I keep forgetting that Mickey is actually my oldest kid in
college. He's 22 days older than Ryan, but he started
kindergarten a year late, since his English was really weak.
Because of that, Ryan was always a year ahead of him in school.
Of course, Ryan took two years off after high school to tour in
that musical, so he started college a year behind Mickey. Of
course, Mickey is double majoring, and he's playing a lot of
sports (mostly local or intramural, not on school teams), so
he's taking five years to graduate, so you end up with both of
them scheduled to graduate next year.
Mickey has to fly to come home, and it literally takes his
flight longer than it takes Noah, Barry, and the boys to drive
from their college. Then he has time to load planes and to get
to the airports and back, so he doesn't get home often. He
comes for Thanksgiving most of the time, always for Christmas,
Spring Break has been about 50/50, and he's made a few other
trips, like for Van's 16th birthday. Oh, but he comes home
every summer, or at least he has.
Which is not to say he won't be coming home this summer. It's
just that, as a Russian Studies student, he's taking a couple of
weeks to visit Russia just after school ends, so he won't be
home until the last week of this month.
Mickey seems very happy. While we consider each other family, I
was never close friends with him like I have been with some
boys. I made an effort, but Mickey has always been a huge
sports fan, and that's just not an interest of mine at all. On
the other hand, not having an interest in common doesn't mean
you can't like each other. I don't think Mickey was unhappy in
high school, but he really seems to have bloomed in college. I
know he has a lot of friends there, he's very active in a number
of activities, he really enjoys having time and teams to play a
lot of sports, and he's holding his grades steady at right
around 3.4, so I don't think we have anything about which to
complain.

Thanks for the update. Boy, it's been years. When I started
reading the forum Van was a little child.
