Daniel (22) and Company [Logan (15) and Mason (13) McFadden]

I'm still trying to sort some things out. One of the big ones
is the difference between a biographical post and an anecdote.
For now, I decided to put this here.
As many of you probably remember, my cousin, Ryan McFarland,
heard that Daniel was looking at an apartment when he graduated,
and invited him to move in. Daniel is living with Ryan rent
free (which is helping him tons with getting his Nissan Altima
Midnight paid off quickly), but in return, Daniel is helping a
lot with Ryan's two sons - Logan, who's going to be 15 in a
couple of months, who's a freshman in high school (and who's my
little comic geek buddy), and Mason, who's a bit younger than
Kenny, and is also a seventh grader. Since Daniel's schedule is
more fluid than Ryan's, Daniel sometimes drops them off at
school, picks them up, or handles other coordination.
Last night, Ryan had to work a bit late, and then had a date
with one of the ladies he works with. The boys came home with
mine, Daniel came over after work, and they ate here, before
Daniel took them home.
While Daniel is 22, I'm going to assume that most of you don't
speak 'tntxt', so I'm going to transcribe the text conversation
into English (or Texan - whatever).
"Dad?"
"Hey."
"I'm about to whup Mas and Log, but I'm not sure how to do it."
By the way - everyone uses those short forms, but it's
pronounced like low with a g, not like it looks. I just
couldn't think of another spelling. Mas is like Mace, not Mass.
"Do you have Ryan's permission?"
"Yeah, just never used it."
"Does he even still spank them?"
"Yeah, well, I've heard him spank Mason two or three times since
I've been here. I don't know about Logan, but he says he does.
Should I wait?"
"What'd they say?"
"They said he'd spank them, and they didn't want to wait."
"It's up to you, bud. But do you seriously mean you don't know
how to give a spanking?"
"Not them, and I don't know what with. I mean, Ryan uses Red on
Mason sometimes, and I guess I could do that, but Logan seems
too big for it, and I'm not sure what to use on him, and I'm
really not sure about putting him over my lap."
We talked about it a bit more. Daniel has a back scrubber like
I always use, so he ended up using that, having them both drop
their boxers and bend over, and he gave Mason six smacks on the
cheeks, while Logan was going to get five on the cheeks and two
on the sit spots, but Daniel said Logan was crying harder than
Mas had been, so he ended up juts getting seven on the rear.
Ryan backed him up on it, when he got home. He said he probably
wouldn't have spanked Logan, but Logan hates getting grounded,
which he probably would have been for a couple of days, but he
let it slide, since it was over and done. He also suggested (to
Daniel, then me separately) that maybe he needs another paddle
or something.
Oh - and I just realized I never mentioned why all this was
happening. The guys were trying to play Daniel when they got
home, after dinner, and were disobeying and lying to him about
chores and homework, like it was his first night in the house.
They claimed to be 'just playing' but it kept up after he gave a
flat out command, so he called it disobedience and handled it
that way. Confidentially, Ryan told me he would probably have
been harder on them, but it seems like they figured out not to
play with Daniel, so all's good.

He said he usually had other things on his mind when he had the
chance to pick it up.

That is the important part.
Do you think that is what Mason and Logan were trying to figure
out? Would Daniel actually spank them or not? Boys and their
boundaries type of thing?

In this case, it might not have been so much a 'boundaries' type
thing as a 'he won't really do it' type thing.
My guess is they'll be a lot more careful in the future.

There are harder ways to learn a lesson--sounds like it was
effective but far from excessive.

So, how did they take it when Daniel announced he was going to
whup them? Did they obey at once? Argue?

Remember that he'd actually announced and settled that before he
contacted me.
From what he told me, there was both the backtracking - 'we were
just playing' - and there was also some straight out 'no' and
resistance. Daniel simply said, 'fine. Go to your rooms until
your Dad gets home.' The idea that Daniel was going to tell
Ryan seemed to get in their face; probably making them realize
how their dad would deal with it.

Aww, this is a nice story. I remember your older boys used to be
your lieutenants, and they would have permission to spank their
younger brothers. Was Bobby your last/youngest lieutenant? Does
that mean none of your sons who were younger than him ever
spanked their brothers? Why was that the case? (I feel like
Marcus came back home or something like that, but I'm not sure.
Or maybe Daniel, Mickey, Noah, etc. were too close in age?)
Is this the first you know of Daniel spanking anyone?
