3 dollars-worth of joy

My hotel up here in the mountains has a swimming pool in a
pretty garden at the back. Temperatures are in the 80s. So I
swim every day . Somedays, it's just me. Some evenings local
boys, mostly around 11 - 14, also use the pool. They are
boisterous and playful, jumping in, diving in, splashing,
bombing, playing - enjoying themselves innocently.
But grumpy Great Uncle Emlyn tells them in bad Arabic, "Keep
away from me. I will not disturb you; you will not disturb me."
The hotel charges the boys 30 dirhams (=3 USD), which is a lot
of money if your father only earns 100 dirhams (=10 USD) a day.
Two boys, still in their t-shirts, were sitting poolside
watching their friends in the water. They had no money. Well,
what can you do? I told the guardian to let them swim. I would
pay.
Hours later, they're still happily in and out of the pool with
their friends.
And I'm sitting here sadly reflecting I could have bought almost
a litre of wine with that 60 dirhams. :-)

True, you could have bought the wine, but honestly, seeing the
boys' having fun is well worth the lack of wine. Well, it would
be for me. Especially if they were swimming au Natural.
Watching things flopping around as boys are having their
innocent fun, is a sight to die for.

On the beach and at the swimming pool everyone covers themselves
when drying and changing.
