Bedroom Situation
By: Jack Date: September 19, 2017, 5:33 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
I couldn't find the previous posts from the old forum, I was
hoping to share to bring everyone up to date on this. Instead,
let me briefly recap.
Clayton is still using the garage apartment, and it's really
only big enough for one person for any extended period of time,
so I'm just going to take those out of consideration.
The boys who live with me year round right now are Connor and
Curtis, Kenny and Colt, Devon and Leif, Van, Zeke, Liam, Parker,
and Ethan.
My local grandsons and grandnephews are all regular visitors.
The college boys now include John, Bryce, the twins, Barry and
Noah, Mickey, Ryan, Greg, and Mike Guice. We also have Jeremy
making regular visits on holidays and vacations. Christian and
Jake Hogan will also be staying here sometimes, but i'm not sure
how often and long their stays will be.
I'll remind you that these are pretty big bedrooms, each with a
walk-in closet and that we have a bathroom for each two
bedrooms.
The four bedrooms downstairs are now split between C&C, and
Kenny and Colt (the four of them sharing a bathroom), and Van
and Zeke in the other two.
Upstairs, we now have Devon and Leif, Liam, and Parker and
Ethan. When Jeremy's here, he'll still room in with Parker and
Ethan.
That leaves us four rooms total for the college boys. I've not
gotten around to making that decision yet.
(Details on rooms will appear in another post - hopefully
tomorrow).

Would it be more helpful to you to just let the boys sort it out
among themselves as to who slept where? Or, is that opening a
Pandora's box?

Could some of the college boys stay with Zeke or Liam since they
don't have roommates? I know Van has animals in his room, so
that room's probably out.
10 college boys! Are there any graduating seniors in that bunch?
Maybe Greg or Mike Guice? Sorry, I can't quite recall their
stories/background, esp. Mike's.

No problem with the college quetion; it's occasionally hard for
me to keep up with who's who!
Quick digression: Things seem to be calming down, and I'm hoping
to have more free time over the next couple of weeks. I'm going
to try to make time to get the phpBB up and running. If I'm
able to do that, then that's where the bios go. If I don't have
the energy to work on that, or I have trouble getting it set up,
then I'll probably post some brief bios here for reference.
In the meantime, no graduating seniors this year. Mickey and
Ryan are both the right age but Mick started a year late,
because of moving here from Russia, and Ryan, of course, took a
couple of years off to perform between HS and college. Greg is
a junior. Mike is actually a grad student, doing his first year
of graduate work.

It wouldn't be a real problem, David. The problem comes because
I need to have the rooms ready. Therefore, it's easier for me
to decide (and most of them are easy to decide, since the twins
and Bryce are best friends and shared a room for years, and the
same with Noah and Barry.

Bryce and John are the only ones of the college boys who know
Liam well, and I don't want to make him uncomfortable. Plus,
given his situation, I think he needs his own room. Not to say
I won't change that if I need to.
On the other hand, John and Zeke shared a room when we first
took Zeke in, so that's probably where he'll end up.
The biggest changes I made to earlier plans are that the
grands/littles aren't getting a separate room. Instead, we
broke down the playroom a bit.
I wish I was better at drawing, and I might try sometime, just
to help this make sense. Consider the playroom to be a living
room. There is an archway between the playroom and the real
living room, an entry to the dining room, and the four
downstairs bedrooms. Once upon a time, the playroom was of
major importance. Remember that, when we moved in here, I had
four older boys (Steve, Mikell, JD, my brother Aaron, and
Christopher Allen, who didn't actually live here) and 5 younger
boys (Tommy, who's almost 3.5 years younger than Chris and
Aaron, Corey, Bobby, Cal, and Barry, with moderately frequent
visits by Brian Franklin, Cason Kirk, and the twins). The
playroom used to be a really active place.
Nowadays, with the tweens having their own video games and
phones, the playroom is the reserve of C&C and my grandsons and
nephews. That's what allowed me to make this change.
We made a fort in the playroom!
Remember that there are Rhett and Ryder, Paden, Glen, and
Kline, Andy and Ollie, and Adam. There's no reason any of them
can't stay in Connor and Curtis' room, but all of them make it
pretty crowded.
What we did was to take some bunk beds we've had in storage (and
maybe buy one or two more without admitting it to any
cousins/nephews/sons or DILs), and put them in four corners to
kind of mark off an area. Then we used the one we did admit
buying

/>as an entry. We then used some room dividers to section things
off and lower the noise, and hung some cloth and blackout
curtains to make it a good sleeping place. We only had to add a
bit of furniture for spare clothes and stuff, and things were
set.
My original feeling was that we needed to have a spare room for
these kids, but they're not often over here on school nights, so
getting cleaned up and ready for bed won't be a huge problem, so
I think this was a good solution. Mr. Mintz brought a couple of
his guys over, to put in some supports on the ceiling and run
another power line and install some lighting, and everything was
done.

love it :)

The major problem I foresee is getting the action figures out of
the way when bedtime approaches.
Kenny and Colt:
The two of them have three full-sized beds in their room. Each
of the boys has a twin over full bunk.
HTML https://www.roomstogokids.com/product/Bunk-Loft-Beds/Creekside-Taffy-Twin-Full-Step-Bunk-Bed-with-Desk/3559206P/
We put them back to back, take out a railing on the 'inside' of
the top, then just use a full, rather than two twin mattresses,
which gives the boys plenty of sleeping and guest options.
Since they have more room now, we also put a daybed/sofa with a
trundle in there. They can easily sleep 8 people, without using
the floor.
Upstairs is a bit different. Devon and Leif get along, but
they're not as close as the younger boys, so they decided to go
with how many of my older boys have shared rooms - dividing the
rooms basically into three.
Remember that these bedrooms are pretty big. When I designed
these, I wanted each kid to be able to have enough room to host
in his bedroom. I wish I could find/remember the
specifications, but they're something like 15X20 (downstairs
rooms are slightly smaller, I believe). The bathroom and closet
doors are on the longer sides. The room is divided by putting
divers against the far wall from the door - middle of that wall,
and coming out about 9 feet. That makes a somewhat tight space,
but it's really just for the beds - it gives privacy, and some
quiet (acoustical room dividers), and maybe a hanging between
them to provide darkness when sleeping habits require. We have
used a number of different beds, but a full-sized with bookcase
headboard, close to the wall, usually gives all the room someone
needs to have comfort and privacy.
Liam and Devon and Parker and Ethan have their rooms set up with
variations on that,

nephews/my grandsons - Kline (10), Glen (9) and Paden (6) -
Christopher Allens' adopted sons - Rhett (6) and Ryder (8)
When I refer to 'the littles', I usuallly mean either just
Connor and Curtis or this group as well, minus Emmet and Jake,
who are both included with the 'tweens' (though most of the
tweens aren't tweens anymore.
The college boys now include John (20 this month), Bryce (18),
the twins (Johnny and Josh - 19), Barry (20) and Noah (21 as of
yesterday), Mickey (22), Ryan (22), Greg (20), and Mike Guice

Wow! It's been a long time since i updated this, though there
really haven't been many changes. There have, however, been a
few.
The garage apartment is now occupied by Jeremy, and he shares
with Ethan, when Ethan is home from school.
The bunk bed fort in the Playroom still exists, and it's set up
to easily sleep 8 elementary kids without anyone having to be
very friendly. We can sleep 12+ there in a pinch. These days,
it's normally used by Ollie ( 8 ) and Andy (10), Rhett (10)
and Ryder ( 8 ), Glenn (11) and Paden ( 8 ), Adam (11), and
Brennan (11). Kline (12) and Dylan (13) generally consider
themselves too old to sleep in a fort anymore. On the other
hand, Connor (10) and Curtis ( 8 ) don't consider themselves too
old, so they'll often sleep out there, and let the older boys
use their room.
In general Connor and Curtis have a bedroom on the lower floor
to themselves, though it can sleep six without using the floor.
Kenny (14) and Colt (15) have their own room downstairs. They
share a bathroom with Van (17), who still has a room to himself.
The other downstairs bedroom is shared by Devon (14), with Jake
(13) and Ryan Tucker (14) when they're home. They share a bath
with C&C.
There are extra bunk beds in both Kenny and Colt's room and in
Devon's. Those extra spaces are split between my oldest
grand-nephew, Jake (14), Kelly (14), and Billy Kadlec (15).
Upstairs, we have five bedrooms.
Leif (16) and Kaden (16) share one, and Parker (18) was sharing
one with Joel Lane (18) until school ended, and Joel moved back
with his family. Liam (18) and Zeke (22) share another.
The last two rooms there are split between Bryce (20), Johnny
and Josh (21) in one and Barry (22), Noah (22) and Mickey (23)
in the other.
John and Greg share one of the guest rooms on my side of the
house, and Mike Guice has the other to himself.
If the Dugans or Lichts move, I'm probably just going to buy
that house for overflow!
