       The Rocky Mountaineer

This is a trip that Stevie has wanted to make for years... Dad
wanted to do it too, but kept putting it off until it was too
late. Stevie decided to bite the bullet and draw a huge chunk of
his savings out... he thinks it was worth it since he hugely
       enjoyed the entire trip.
(As an aside, Stevie has become the type of flyer that he hated
when he was travelling for work... doddery and unsure of which
way he needs to go... the terminal he used to fly out of was
       torn down many years ago)
       The train leaves Vancouver:

The train follows the track beside Lake Shuswap out of

Stevie had a great time and would love to do it again (there are
       other routes) if he could...

       Spectacular scenery! I love mountains.
Being doddery is fine so long as you accompany it with an air of
faded elegance suggesting you used to get your valet to do this
       sort of thing.

Ah yes, train journeys! Wonderful. How long does it take? Do
you sleep some nights on the train? Vancouver to where?

There are several journeys of varying lengths - the shortest
(which Stevie took) is two days, but some of the circular
routes take nine days or more. Stevie went from Vancouver to
Lake Louise, then took a motor coach to Banff... (you could have
taken the train all the way to Banff and not stopped at Lake
       Louise).
You do not sleep on the train... the train stops at dark and you
sleep in a hotel. Since the point of the trip is sightseeing, it
would pretty much defeat the purpose if you slept on the train.
This is also the reason why Stevie's trip was the last of the
season... the days get too short and you would miss a lot of the
scenery. The trips start again in May.

In my humble opinion, you've made the right decision. Get out of
your comfort zone and go see the world as long as you are
healthy enough to do so. Glad that you had a great trip.
I've been on vacation in British Columbia and Alberta once, and
I can only say that the landscape is absolutely stunning. Also
the flora and fauna, which includes whales, otters, ospreys,
       bears... :o )

       Stevie,
I am so glad that you enjoyed your trip. One of my many careers
in life was as a Motor Coach driver. I took people on trips all
over the United States and Canada to see the many sights. The
one trip I did not take was the Alaskan trip which for me would
have been 59 days long. I would have taken one group of seniors
from Indiana to Alaska, then they would have flown home and
another group fly out which I would then toured them around
Alaska and part of Canada, then they would fly home and another
group fly out and I would drive them back to Indiana. I didn't
want to be out for that long of a period, so I never drove the
trip. Thus, never saw Alaska or that part of Canada. I would
have loved seeing it, just not having to drive it.
Saying that, Motor Coach tours are a good way to travel and you
get to see a lot and stop at places along the way. They usually
stay in awesome hotels and lodges. They go to see all the
popular sites. The modern coaches are very comfortable.
Drivers are friendly people. Tour guides are there for you and
       your needs.
       Glad you enjoyed your trip.

Ah yes. Keep going while everything still works: legs, eyes,
ears, etc. Most people my age (77) are either dead, arthritic,
deaf or half-blind. I suppose I'm lucky. Don't know why.
