When I got home Thursday, I was trying to get things straight in
my mind - was I mad at people? Were they mad at me? Did Simon
really think Troy and I were… dating or something? I mean, I
liked Troy, but I liked Daniel and Tate and Kyle as well. I
sure wouldn't want to date Tate or Kyle -- and I was pretty sure
it wouldn’t even be legal. Man, I’d hate to see how Dad might
       react to that.
Speaking of Dad… After dinner that night, Dad stopped me when I
went to leave the table. He stood up and walked with me.
“I think we need to talk. Would you like to use your room?”
He hadn’t sounded threatening, so I just shrugged.
When we got there, I turned around to face him.
“Your room,” he reminded me, ‘sit where you want.”
I plopped on my bed. He grabbed my desk chair, turned it around,
and sat straddling the back of it.
“I owe you an apology, Spencer.”
       I waited.
“I shouldn’t have spanked you the way I did, Saturday morning.”
I had a lot I wanted to say about that, but I noticed that ‘way
he did’, and decided I was just safer with a nondescript nod.
“I’m not saying I was wrong to spank you, Spence. I know you’re
a teenager, but you bought that one. What I was wrong about is
that I should have explained things to you first. And maybe to
spank you in front of that kid -- Darrel?”
       “Daniel.”
Daniel and his dad. The thing is….Well, you two boys are three
       years apart…”
       “Two,” I interrupted again.
“I thought he was in sixth grade,” Dad said.
“He is, but he’s already twelve.”
“Okay, maybe it’s not quite as big a deal as I thought. The
thing is, the world’s gone crazy. Police arrest kids for taking
pictures of themselves and sharing them with a friend. I was
scared to death that something like that might happen to you.
And I think I spanked you in front of Daniel and his dad, so Mr.
Costello would know you’d been punished.
“I was not wrong to spank you, and I’m not sure I was wrong to
do it in front of them. I was wrong to just drop it on you like
that, and not to discuss it with you. I don’t think I was
angry…. Well, not any more angry than I ever am when I spank you
boys, but I was scared. For that, I’m sorry.”
I sat there a second, while Dad quietly waited. Finally, i sat
       up a bit.
“I was pretty mad at you for doing that. I mean, I know I
deserved it, even though he did ask me to do it. I guess I knew
it was wrong. But I didn’t know why you were so mad, and you
       didn’t talk to me.”
I paused to gather my thoughts. Finally I shrugged again.
“Thanks for explaining it, Dad. It helps.”
He came over, took my shoulder in his hands and gave it a quick
       shake and a light sleeve.
“I’m not perfect Spencer, but I try to treat you right.
Something I can promise you is, when you don't understand
something, try to talk about it. It might not solve every
problem, but it rarely makes things worse.”
I promised i would, and then he left me alone.
As the evening dragged on, I got a little irate with Nick. I
remember when we used to see each other almost every day. Now I
really needed someone to talk to. Since he wasn’t around, I
ended up falling asleep, trying to figure out what I’d say to
       him if he was around.
The next morning, Simon called me. I was trying to watch the
new Marvel’s Runaways and had just finished breakfast.
       “What up?”
“We have a little more work to do. Everything went well
yesterday, but we’re going to be doing it in the main
auditorium, so we have to move the props, and I think we need to
change how just a couple of things are being done.”
“Just you and me?” I said, trying not to sound like I was
       protesting.
“No, I talked to a few people that stayed yesterday, and we’ll
       have some help. You in?”
“Sure,” I replied, not having anything to do but catch up on TV.
       “Want a right?”
       “Sure?”
“You be ready in twenty minutes?”
“If I hang up and hurry.”
       “See you then.”
I paid attention when Simon told us what needed doing, but I was
also looking at whom else was there. As soon as I had the
chance, I started chasing a few of them down.
“Hey, Kyle,” I said, grabbing him up from behind and tossing him
       in the air.
       He squealed.
       “Hey, Spence,” he giggled.
“Did you like me sitting you and your brother last week?”
“Yeah!” he reassured me. “It was great.”
“Okay, but if we do it again, I’m not gonna spank your little
brother. Not unless your dad says it’s okay.”
He looked sad for a moment.
“‘Cause you got in trouble for spanking that other boy?”
       “Yeah.”
       He nodded seriously.
       “Okay.”
A moment later, I walked up to Tate.
“Hey,” he said, as I came closer, helping him lift part of a
       fence.
       “Hey.”
He blushed and looked unsure of what to say, so I helped him
       out.
“You know you were wrong to threaten to tell on me by telling a
       lie, don’t you?”
“I know,” he said, suddenly looking very shy. “I thought you
       liked it, though.”
“I did, Tate, but it was wrong - for both of us. It was wrong
for you because you forced me. It was wrong for me, because
       you’re too young.”
       “Are you mad at me?”
“No, because if you were older, I’d love to do it more. But
you’re not older, and I could get in bad trouble, so we can’t do
       it. Okay?”
       “Okay. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be sorry. I’m not mad at you, and I think we’re still
       friends, don’t you?”
       He smiled and nodded.
When I’d finished helping Tate, it was easy to find Daniel.
“So what I wanted to say,” I told him, “is that I really like
you, and I hope we can still be friends. The thing is, with
what already happened, I just don’t think our parents will be
comfortable with us hanging out together right now.”
“Yeah, you’re probably right. My dad’s been bugging me every
day to make sure nothing happened. He likes me working with the
       church, but right now….”
       “But we’re still friends?”
I nodded, then he smiled and nodded back.
And then there was only one thing left to do. Unlike the rest,
       this one really was hard.
       “Troy?”
       “What?”
       “You were right. I’m sorry.”
“What?” he repeated, in a totally different inflection.
“You were right.” I looked around to make sure we were alone,
       then went on.
“I shouldn’t have played with Tate. Maybe I should have called
his bluff. Even then, it was sure wrong for me to put him over
my lap and spank him while I was still bare. He was too young.
Maybe he didn’t understand it, but I did.”
Troy nodded, and I think he tried to say something, but he
didn’t seem to know what to say.
“I enjoyed it when we checked each others’ butts last Saturday.”
Troy nodded again, turning really red as he did.
“I’ve really enjoyed a lot about this Pageant. I thought I was
going to hate it, and I only did it, so Dad didn’t ground me.
       “I really don’t have a lot of friends. I really don’t need a
lot of friends, but I have enjoyed being around a lot of people
       these last few weeks.”
       Troy smiled at me.
“That’s kind of how I am too. Do you like to read?”
“Yeah - especially sci-fi and fantasy, but sometimes I like
       mystery and scary books.”
       “You play board games?”
“Some, but I really like card games.”
       “Like Yu-Gi-Oh?”
       “And Magic.”
       He smiled at me again.
       “Troy?”
He looked at me, obviously asking what.
       “You wanna… I mean. I was just thinking…:
“Do I wanna spend the night?”
“No. Well, yeah, that’d be cool, but I was wondering if you
       wanted to be my boyfriend?”
He blushed and looked away, but he also smiled.
       “That’d be awesome.”
We stepped closer to each other, but neither knew what to say.
       “Hey, Spence?”
       “Yeah.”
“If we wait for Simon, we can probably get him to take us to my
house to get some clothes, and then drop us at your house.”
       “That’d be good.”
“You know what would be better?”
       “What’s that?”
“If we ask, maybe he’ll spank us, then we can compare again when
we get to your house… and, you know - stuff.”
I don’t know how Troy found out Simon would spank, but he did it
a lot better than Nick did, but without doing it too hard. And
Troy and I did compare when Simon dropped us off, and it was
awesome. But not nearly as good as ‘stuff’.

It's funny that I tried to so hard to remember who was feeling
what about who, when it turns out I'd actually resolved most of
it in the next (final/this) chapter. Of course, Jeff Todd
really did need a spanking and to have his mouth soaped for
gossiping, but you can't have everything.
