       Name that tune!
By: Emlyn Morgan Date: March 18, 2023, 10:10 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Here am I, back in Bliighty for a couple of months (Ramadan
plus), and no one to watch I don't have more than two glasses
with my mid-day meal. Some call it lunch, but I don't like that
word. We called it dinner back in Pantyffynnon. In my other
       country we call it dejeuner.
So I fell asleep in the postprandial armchair. Then, when I
woke and made some coffee, I wanted some music. But what? I
don't know. Western music gets to sound very strange when
you're not used to it. Too contrived.
So I went to the cupboard and pulled out a CD completely at
random and set it to play without looking at the label. I've
       never done that before.
It was just the thing. Orchestral and very lively at first. I'd
swear I'd never heard it before. It's still playing. A quieter
movement now. Yes, western for sure. Probably Russian. Early
1900s? Shostakovich? Probably. I'd have half-a-crown each way
on it. The sort of disc you have on your shelf but never play.
       Whoever plays Shostakovich?
Anyway, I'll have another cup of coffee, and let you know later
whether you all owe me half-a-crown.

Shostakovich's first symphony was premiered in 1926 so not
really early 20th century. Whether anything sounds like early
20th century depends on what early 20th century music is
supposed to sound like. Schönberg's Verklärter Nacht dates to
1899 and sounds very modern, perhaps being the first piece of
Expressionist* music. I was amused, going back a few years when
shops stocked more than 23 CDs, to see the music of Berg
classified as "contemporary" when he died in 1936.
       * "Impressionism tells you what it is like to go for a swim;
Expressionism tells you what it is like to drown." (Conductor
       John Carewe)
       Anyway, what was the music?

Plag, my Russian cousins performed with Shostakovich while they
were at the Moscow and Gnessin conservatories. Not ALL that
       long ago.

Yes, Squarer, cold, dank, grey. I'll never come back here in
March again. I came to get away from Ramadan which has crept
forward into winter, being ten days earlier every year. Never
mind. I'm flying out again 2nd May.

Interesting. Must have been at least half a century ago though.

I have boxed CD collections of Shostakovich's symphonies,
concertos and string quartets. Opinions differ on now great a
       composer he is:

I have just recalled that I wrote a story in which a boy "was
known for his disdain of music composed before 1899 (the year of
Schönberg's Verklärte Nacht)." It can be found here:

It was Shostakovich, so everyone owes me half-a-crown.
Actually, The Festive Overture opus 96,1954, followed by some
       others of his works.

Found it on YouTube. "Festive" is the right word for it.
