       Perspectives on the blizzard...
By: stevieweeks Date: December 23, 2022, 12:01 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
According to the weather forecast, most of North America is set
for a blizzard over the next few days... the weather actually
has turned bad over the last few hours and we have had power
failures (due to high winds) already. This is a rural area at
the base of the Bruce Peninsula (Sauble Beach); there have been
high winds and I can hear the waves crashing on the beach when I
put Fritz outside (he is NOT enthusiastic about going outside
       right now)...
I have been looking at various news sites today from around the
world covering the blizzard and have got to laugh at the British
       sites...
Of course, it is too early to have a lot of pictures of the
current storm... we only have a couple of inches of snow right
now, and the temperature has only just started to fall, so don't
expect any spectacular photos of snow drifts for some time...
The BBC and the Manchester Guardian have, of course, dug out
stock pictures of heavy snowfalls... being British, their idea
of what constitutes a heavy snowfall is rather different to a
       Canadian viewpoint...
This is the BBC's idea of a heavy snowfall:

This is Stevie's road after a moderate snowfall the year before
       last:

By moderate snowfall, I mean that the disruption involved was
minimal... School buses did not run that morning, but the
schools were open. People were expected to go to work although
some lateness due to driveway clearing would be allowed. Stores
and other businesses were all open as usual...
Stevie did have to clear an area for Fritz to do his business in
since 12 inches of snow would bury the little guy (Fritz does
       not like snow):

If the snowfall does reach impressive levels, Stevie will take
pictures and share them with you...

Here we barely got any snow. The temps got down to -12 degrees
Fahrenheit, with a wind chill of -30 degrees, because the wind
is blowing really hard. I have a lot of my neighbor's trash in
       my yard.

We got 6" yesterday, quickly enough that road conditions coming
back from a necessary appointment made me decide not to leave my
house the rest of the day. I had theater tickets for last night
which went unused :( The snow here turned to rain, heavy
enough that it washed nearly all the snow away by morning,
meaning I didn't have to clear my driveway or walks, but the
temp then dropped to -1F making things very slippery. I've
been through far worse blizzards, but road conditions here were
as bad as I have ever seen.

I've read that there are parts of the US where the weather
conditions are really dangerous, and where there is no
       electricity.
I really hope you are all okay, and that being stuck indoors due
to poor road conditions is the worst that happens.
       Happy holidays, everyone!

Thank you. Power is on here, and I have a generator should that
change. Some of my friends are not so lucky. It's dangerously
cold outside and people losing power for any length of time are
in danger both to themselves and to their homes from frozen
pipes, etc. Supposed to warm up in a few days. I sure I hope
       so. Meanwhile, Merry Christmas everybody.

We so far have not had too much snow - maybe six inches (15 cm)
       - but the wind is gusting to about 100 kph and the visibility on
the roads is close to zero... after a number of accidents caused
by white-outs, pretty well all of them were closed...
Luckily, the temperature hasn't gone very low - we have -6
centigrade (22 F) right now, but with the wind chill it seems
much lower and the wind chill is about - 14 (7 F) which,
together with the blowing snow, precludes Fritz's walkies. He is
NOT happy about going outside, either...
The power has been going on and off as well... probably tree
branches coming in contact with the 4.8 kV feeder lines... this
is a bit of a nuisance because we do not have city water and of
course, our well pump and the UV disinfection system run on the
       hydro...
However, all-in-all, so far we have not had anything like the
       worst of this storm...
