Not quite, no.
It suddenly came to me that I had a lot of clearly posed
pictures showing two prep school boys not engaged in doing
anything. I then asked myself: Why are all these pictures being
taken showing two prep school boys not engaged in doing
anything.

Another attempt to answer.
Maybe they are doing something. They are hanging out.

Here is a typical picture:

(Two of the
boys in kilts in another thread)
They are so not doing anything they are not even just hanging
out.

From what I am seeing.
The blond headed boy is the prime subject of the pic and the
dark-haired boy is just joining the pic. His shoestrings are
untied, and he is looking sideways at the other boy, so he is
just trying to follow the other boy's lead.
So, they are posing, and the dark-haired boy wasn't expecting to
be in the photo. He was probably asked to get in it at the last
minute.
It could be a photo taken for the schools, brochure. The spot
was picked because of the bell.
I'm thinking the photographer said something like, there is too
much open space, we need another kid.

These sort of pictures were likely taken for three reasons:
1. By the school for brochures or other official publications
2. By parents as a memento of their sons and their sons' friends
3. By the boys as keepsakes and memories
Over time they have found their way into the public eye and then
with the advent of the internet . . . .
One's imagination can put the boys up to whatever activity or
thought desired.
