Kaden Connelly
By: Jack Date: December 8, 2017, 4:38 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
I have been working on a story abut Kaden since Tuesday, but I
haven't been able to really jump in and grind it out. I don't
want to give too much away, but I do feel like I need to mention
him here and now.
Kaden is living with us.
It sounds like his mom abandoned him, though I'm not sure that
was the intention. At this point, no one has been able to
contact his mother, so we're not sure.
Kaden is a student at BCA, and the whole thing started with him
and Marcus, which is how I got into it. With input from the
school, and Kaden's own statement, the Family Court Judge has
made me Kaden's guardian, since there is no record of other
relatives, and since he knows my situation.
Kaden is a freshman at BCA. He plays piano, and he knows Van.
He plays soccer, and he knows Colt. He is also friends with a
number of boys who are regular guests around here, so he's
pretty comfortable.
Kaden has been here four days. We've had to talk to the police
a couple of times, Kaden's had to see a therapist, we had to go
in and talk to the judge, I took him in to see Dr. Sammy (and he
got a couple of shots),
There are some other things I'll talk about, but I need to
finish the story. Hopefully that will happen this weekend, so I
can post it and move on.
Kaden is currently 14. He's 'average boyishly cute'. He is
pretty tall - nearly as tall as me, so about 5'10 or 11". He's
pretty skinny though, and if he ways 140 lbs, it's soaking wet
and with rocks in his pocket. He's firm and solid, but not
especially muscular, except that he has great calves. His eyes
are blue, and I'd call his hair a dark blond - like wheat or
honey blond. He's not especially hairy, though he has a little
on his lower legs, a good thatch under each arm, and a decent
patch elsewhere.
He is worried about his mom, but he doesn't seem too upset, so I
kind of wonder if this kind of thing has happened before or
something (though he denies it). In the meantime, he's mostly
doing his day to day stuff well, and he seems pretty happy to
have all the other kids around.
There are a few other things going on, and I will update those
as soon as I get the story posted.

It is good you could be there for him.
Do you know if Mom has any emotional, mental or addiction
issues? If so, a more permanent solution might be needed for
Kaden until Mom can get the help she needs.

Good Luck Kaden. Wish the best.
I hate abandonment whether intentional or not. Just long
absences are bad.
So hopefully Kaden can feel secure at your place, Jack. Having
others around him may help. Hopefully.

I think Kaden saw it as a sign of maturity and respect - at
least at first. Now, he's obviously worried about his mom, but
it's not a major, all-consuming thing yet, so I'm hoping we can
get some answers soon.

I don't know her at all. Kaden doesn't think she has any
addiction issues. I do know that she was laid off (or fired or
something) around the time school started.

Thanks for getting this story started. When you first described
his situation in chat, my response was that some "agency" needed
to step in and give him the help he needs. Sounds like you
became that agency. I'm glad he is in good hands, but hope to
hear soon what has happened to his mother (and why his father is
not in the picture).

I have been receiving a lot of questions about this, so I wanted
to post a quick update on the situation.
Yes, I am still working on the story. At this point, the Advent
Calendar is breaking into three chapters. Between the first and
second chapter, I posted David's story. Zyngaru has submitted
a multipart story that will post between chapters two and three.
I have two more chapters of Chapter Two, and then I hope to
have time to complete the story with Kaden.
I don't want to spoil the story, but this is all stuff we've
learned since then, and I don't think it reflects back on that
story.
1) Part of Kaden's trouble is that they'd been evicted from
their apartment. The judge put a hold on their eviction, but
the police wanted to search it, before we go in and get his
stuff. They've done that, and there is no evidence of violence
or anything. More than that, they were able to confirm a couple
of parts of his story, so he's not a suspect or anything.
2) This started last Tuesday, and we're hoping to be able to get
into his apartment today. Because of that, I took him shopping.
Most of our hand-me-down stuff went to help after Harvey. We
did have a good coat, but not much else. He borrowed a pair of
lounge pants and a tee shirt that one of the twins had left, so
we could wash his school uniform, then we went shopping
Wednesday and got him a couple of uniforms, a pair of jeans and
some casual shirts, underclothes, and a pair of warm pajamas for
the evenings.
3) We found out Friday that during or right after the divorce,
his mom got a restraining order against his father. There were
actual abuse charges filed against his father. From what they
can tell us, she claimed that his butt was pretty bruised up,
but she 'didn't think' to take pictures or show a doctor or cop,
so the charges were dismissed. He doesn't remember that at all,
so it sounds likely it was just BS. However, that does seem to
be about the last time Kaden saw him.
4) His father has still been involved. There seems to be no
unpaid child support, and his father's the one who's been paying
for the school.
5) Kaden attends BCA because he is/was ADHD, and he had some
discipline problems (well, still does, but they were apparently
much worse when he was pre-teen).
6) His mom hasn't been in contact since Thanksgiving. That's
two and a half weeks now, and Kaden is starting to worry.
7) The last he talked to her, she seemed a little down or upset,
but before that, she said she had a job, and was going to save
the money to bring him out to her (in California, but he
doesns't know where).
8) His mom's phone wasn't paid last month, so it's off. They'll
have to get it turned on to ping/trace it, from what I
understand.
9) Kaden is doing fine during the days. He's had some sleep
problems at night. I've had him take a hot bath, then rubbed
his back until he fell asleep. I also gave him some Nyquil last
night. We're going to go see Dr. Sammy this afternoon.
10) With his agreement, Kaden is being treated just like any
other boy who just moved in here. I am reminding him of chores
and rules. He's had to do corner time a couple of times now.
Basically, while he's a little distracted or flighty, he's
mostly well behaved.
11) Today's the day that I start moving wrapped packages from
the store to the tree. I have decided that Kaden needs to be
included with that. Thankfully, with him being friends with so
many of my kids, I already know a number of things he likes.
I'm going to stop this morning and get him a Lego Architect set,
which will be a nice, big package to go under the tree to start.
I'll also get him a stocking to hang.
And I think that brings us up to date for now.

What a complicated situation! I'm looking forward to learning
more about this. Thanks for sharing.
Tracing the phone would be promising if it were done soon
enough. If it worked it would lead somewhere close to where the
mother had been. The problem is that the battery will have run
down and the mother would have no reason to recharge it since it
didn't work. That should have been done sooner. The phone
company may be able to tell where the phone was when it was last
used.
