I have to agree with the rest. In general, 'warm up' spankings
don't seem too realistic, though I can think of a couple of
times when a hand spanking followed by something else might/has
happened, and it's generally either a situation like you
described or a case of where I decided a hand spanking wasn't
enough (for instance, someone talking themselves from hand to
paddle). On the other hand, this is NOT something that would
bother me in a story, because it does seem fairly realistic,
albeit not common.

Baclk in the day in the UK beating could also mean getting it
with an implement particularly at school. The term beating is
either slightly different in the US or has morphed into
something more like assault or abuse. Also the anti CP lobby and
the media sometimes used it interchangeably for the shock value.
I ma attuned to reading of warm up spankings or hand /implement
spankinigs but multiple implements dont grab me.

I think the term "Beating" has a different meaning in the USA
than the UK. Growing up I would hear. "I'm go to beat your A
S S." But what was meant was "I was going to get a whipping."
The term "Spanking" was usually a hand spanking. When
implements were used it was called a "Whipping." Schools used
the term "Paddling" because that is the implement they used.
The term "Beating" meant the person was literally beat. Abused.
Sometimes with fists, baseball bats, tire irons and so forth.
When someone said a child was beat, then it meant that child had
strips, bruises, black eyes, sometimes broken ribs and etc. If
a child got beat, the person who did it, better hope no one
found out, because adults in the neighborhood would go looking
for that person and give them a taste of their own medicine. My
dad was a Marine and beatings of children within the Corps
Family was common. The Marine that did it, would get a blanket
party and then he would go to the infirmary to recover. Marines
took care of their own back then. Both in protection and in
punishment. Things are different now.
Now Marines whipped their boys something terrible. A Marine
brat with a purple, black and blue, bruised bottom, was okay to
the Corps. Boy's Butts were made to be whipped. Also, once a
boy had his 13th birthday, he was no longer considered a child
to the Corps. So, then it was acceptable to use your fists on a
teenaged son. This wasn't considered "Beating" your son.
All of that probably confuses you more than clarifying. Sorry.

Yes, in the UK, particularly in school, they used to have
beatings, meaning CP with an implement, and "fatal beatings":

Like other responses, my own feeling, look back to my own
experience as an adolescent, is that 'warm up spankings' are not
so realistic... More realistic is the parent falling back on
administering a hand-spanking if the punishment with, for
example, a leather implement, was being received badly by his
son... trying to put his hands or arms in the way of the belt,
or trying to protect his ass, wriggling, and struggling. Looking
back, I never took bare bottomed punishment with the belt very
well (my father was a policeman and he used a fearsome thick
leather trouser belt on us), and even in my middle adolescence,
after only four or five wallops, I would already be bubbling and
struggling to free myself - interrupting his firm purpose. He
would stop, and then grip my wrists and give me a very hard
hand-spanking instead, and which seemed to go on much longer
than if I had just tried to bear the pain of the belt.

My dad didn't stop. If you were stupid enough to put your hands
in the way of the belt, your hands got the belt too. You
learned quickly not to do that. My dad didn't stop a whipping
until he was ready to stop, no matter what anyone else felt or
thought. I don't remember him ever hand spanking me or my
brothers. It was always the belt.

Imo, in reality moving from a warm-up to an implement is very
common but we're talking about fiction here.
If this is the character's first experience with the belt and
it's combined with some dialogue that makes it menacing and
humiliating to some degree, like a foreshadowing it makes
perfect sense. Also a good lead to future stories with that
character.
