Things were quiet on Monday. Simon introduced me and Troy, and
then told us what he wanted us to be doing. We were working in
the old building, which was mainly offices and storage now. He
showed us where things we might need were, and he showed us how
he and Mr. Todd had divided the area up for what we were going
to be working on.
The next day, all the kids came in. The actors were mostly
younger kids. The ones who were going to be working on the set
and props with me were mostly older elementary kids and even a
few middle school guys. There were some girls, but most of them
were with the choir. The ones who were with me apparently
hadn’t learned to avoid gender stereotypes, because they were
all helping with the costumes.
Simon and Mr. Todd already had an idea of what they wanted.
That meant I spent my first day figuring out what each boy knew
how to do, and how they could help with our work. It was
actually pretty fun, though some of the younger boys wanted to
play more than work. I was just glad that Mr. Todd hadn’t put
any boys younger than fourth grade in my group.
It took some time at home last night, and a bit of chat with
Simon, but I realized that we really didn’t have to do that much
work. Most of the stuff we were using had been used in previous
years. What we were really doing was just customizing things a
bit to fit the things Simon wanted to do.
And then came Friday.
Maybe working after school Friday wasn’t such a great idea.
Everyone showed up, but everyone was also excited and very
energetic about school being out. The kids spent as much time
playing around as they did working, and the younger ones
probably spent more.
Daniel was a sixth grader, and he was actually working on his
project. He was incredibly cute, with dark blond hair he wore
short, except a bit longer at the front, where it kicked up in
one of those tails. His lips were deep red, and he had very
blue eyes. The only thing that wasn’t perfect was a single
freckle on the left side of his upper lip, and I think that made
him look even better.
He was checking some backdrops, stretching them out to see if
the art needed touching up. He was down on his knees, and he
kept leaning way far up to stretch the canvas, and I was
watching to see if his undershirt would finally come untucked.
Before it could, I was called away.
“Hey,” I called out to the boys who were back in storage area,
playing around.
“Spencer,” called out Brad, a geeky 11 year old, who looked a
lot like Harry Potter in the first movie, except he was blond.
“Yeah?”
“My Dad’s here. Can I go?”
“Did you put your stuff away?”
“I’ll do it for him,” Kyle said, as he came out of the storage
area.
“All right,” I agreed, “but y’all stay out of that back room.”
“We were just playing,” another boy said as he came out. “We
weren’t hurtin’ nuthin’.”
“Whatever,” I responded. Then I moved into the front area where
most of the boys were still working.
I escorted Brad out and noticed that the weather had turned
colder and it was drizzling outside. There were enough clouds
it was already mostly dark outside.
“All right, you guys, it’s getting close to time to go. Put
your stuff up. Is anyone in the middle of something or have
anything wet?”
We carefully put the stuff with damp paint aside where it could
dry, and the kids were putting their tools up. At least some of
them were. Others were still playing, even after I told them to
stop.
Again.
“Parents are showing up. Please get to the front door if you’re
expecting your ride. C’mon guys, we all want to go home, so
let’s get moving.”
The choir kids had left the other building, where they’d been
practicing on the main stage. Simon had led his actors out and
was making sure they all got into their cars. The weather was
keeping everyone inside until their ride arrived, and it was a
real mess.
It finally emptied out, though a few cars had obviously had to
look around for some people. When the last car was pulling out,
Simon came back inside. There was one kid still there: a boy
who was the son of one of Simon’s professors, who Simon took
home.
At least, that’s what I thought.
“Where’d everyone go?”
I turned around to find Kyle and another boy I only vaguely
remembered.
So, it turned out that Kyle caught a ride home every evening
with a friend of his, but that boy had been absent from school.
Kyle came on to the meeting instead of taking the bus home,
figuring he could get a ride from someone else. The only
problem was, he’d been playing around, ‘exploring’ in the back
storage area, so he hadn’t heard the rush to pick everyone up.
Okay, it did go pretty fast today, but everyone wanted to get
out of the bad weather.
Simon had people waiting on him, and the college was the exact
opposite direction from where Kyle lived. At least the other
kid only lived a couple of blocks away, so Simon was able to
give him a ride home. Kyle didn’t have a phone, but he had his
dad’s number written down, so we called his dad. He had no
trouble coming to pick Kyle up, but he worked in the city, and
the weather had traffic really bad, so it was probably going to
be thirty or forty minutes, and we couldn’t leave him in the
building alone or outside, so I got to wait.
Simon and I made sure all the doors were locked, he gave me the
code for the alarm, and then he left. The side door locked
automatically, so if we left that way, I just had to make sure
it closed behind us.
It was a pain in the butt, and I didn’t look forward to having
to walk home, but I wasn’t too mad about it. At least I
wouldn't be if things worked out like I hoped.

Was spanking Kyle not an option for Spencer? :D ;D

I read over the ending just now, and it seems pretty clear to
me, but maybe it's a bit foggy.
I think this is the important part...
so it was probably going to be thirty or forty minutes,
and we couldn’t leave him in the building alone or outside, so I
got to wait.
And now Kyle and Spence are waiting for Kyle's dad to arrive.
Maybe it's a bit confusing because this is more of a cliffhanger
than a separate chapter. So, as of now, we don't know what
options are available, though Spence made it pretty obvious he
has something in mind.

I re-read it a couple of times and I see it now.
At first read I thought Kyle was picked up and Spencer was
walking home.
I see now that they are still in the church waiting.
This is gonna be good. ;D ;D

Not sure what was foggy. It seemed clear to me that Kyle and
Spencer are alone at the church waiting for Kyle's dad.
