Part of decorating the tree is putting the ornament on top.
It's easy for you to keep track of which boy gets to do it,
since the boy born in an even year gets to top the tree on even
years, meaning it's Pete's turn this time. However, this year
       there's a problem.
Nick went shopping with your spouse about a week ago, when Pete
was at a school event. Your spouse let Pete pick out a new tree
topper, but Nick didn't want to use it, so he picked his
traditional favorite again. Now Nick is upset and pouting, and
just back talked your spouse who was trying to cheer him up.
You didn't want to send him to his room during a family event,
but is the back talk an attitude too far?

I think this was supposed to be today's BOTD And no, backtalk
isn't an attitude too far unless it's so egregious it has to be
dealt with more severely than a quick verbal reprimand.

I'll allow an opportunity for him to apologise sincerely. If he
can do that, I think we can talk this out without resorting to
       harsher discipline methods or punishment.

No, for reasons we'll go into later, Jack needed to take a break
today, and I decided I could just leave a blank spot, do this,
or post some Christmas spanking pics which have already been
shared multiple times over the years.

I'll ask Pete if, to do a kind thing for his little brother, he
would consent to use Nick's tree topper, at least part of the
holidays. It's his turn, so it's his decision, but Santa would
surely put him in his list of very good boys.
Regarding Nick, I'll take him to a private place and hold him
and talk to him a bit. No spanking.

Afraid I'm too confused to answer sensibly. Nick went shopping
with the spouse, but Pete picked out the decoration?
