[color=green]It gets dark early here in winter, but I hadn’t
bothered to turn my lights on. I’d finished all my assignments
at school, so I didn’t have any homework due tomorrow.
Something was bugging me, but I couldn’t figure out what it was.
I thought about talking to Nick, maybe going over to his house,
but I didn’t know what I’d say.
I think I cleared three feet off my bed when my door burst open.
“What are you doing in here with the lights off, Spence?” Mom
demanded.
“Thinking?” I replied, covering my eyes as she flipped on the
overhead.
Mom was carrying some laundry and plopped a stack down on my
dresser before turning to me.
“You have a headache?”
“No, just trying to figure some stuff out.”
She looked at me for a moment, before changing the subject.
“Good news,” she said. “I found your community service for you.
The Church is having some trouble with their Christmas Pageant,
and they need a someone about your age, who’ll be free when the
younger kids are, and who can handle details.”
“Gee,” I said sarcastically, “Thanks.”
Mom stopped and her back went straight.
“Well, if you prefer to be grounded the rest of the year…”
I was pretty ticked off with her. I was ninety-percent sure
that this stupid ‘community service’ Dad had come up with, on
top of grounding me for a weekend, was her idea. Why they
couldn’t have just taken my phone a couple of days or something,
I dunno. It was just a pain. Martin might hate getting his
butt spanked when he got in trouble, and I hadn’t liked it when
I was his age, but he had no idea how much easier it was to just
get it over with. I wish Dad had just whupped my ass and got it
over with, instead of putting me through all this bullshit.
Still…
“Sorry,” I made myself say grudgingly. “You just startled me.
Didn’t you promise you’d start knocking before coming in my
room?”
She started to reply, then stopped, and suddenly looked a bit
embarrassed.
“Sorry,” she replied after a few seconds. “I guess it’s hard to
develop new habits.”
I nodded that I understood.
She reached into the back pocket of her jeans and pulled out a
card.
“This is the number for the youth minister. His cell’s on it.
Try to call him this evening, and he can tell you what you’ll
need to do and when to be there.”
She sat the card on my dresser, next to the clothes.
“Thanks,” I replied. “For finding that, and for folding my
clothes.”
She smiled, and replied, ‘no problem’ before leaving, pulling
the door closed behind her, but leaving the lights on.
I started to lie back again, then stopped, and decided I should
get up. Maybe I just needed to find something to do.
