23 May 2020 - Big Party
By: Jack Date: May 23, 2020, 7:35 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
First of all, allow me to say that I have known everyone
involved for years and I trust all of them to be honest (at
least to questions like this). Because of the situation with my
mother, while I wasn't able to maintain social distance, I did
wear a mask the entire time, except when i was eating, and
others did as well (more or less). Everyone who was invited has
maintained social distancing during this ongoing problem, and
everyone checked their temperatures before coming over.
The thing is, except for a few high school finals that have to
be taken at certain times next week, everyone is through with
school for this year - finally. The last few months have been
hard for everyone - harder on some than others. When I got to
talking with other parents, or heard things from my kids, we
scheduled a celebration. It's hardly what any of the boys would
have made their first choice, but it was still a good time for
all, and I think we needed it.
No, I don't know how many people were here. Trying not to miss
anyone, we had the Malones, Marchants, Dugans, Lichts,
Bartletts, Simons, Worleys, Tidwells, Cavanaughs, Loomises,
Strouses, Russos, Lincolns, Reasoners, Joyces and a few older,
individual boys (like Jake Ames, Wyatt, Garrett, Eli Rice, Denny
Archer, and Sam Sutton). We did the whole 9-yards with the
grilling - burgers, dawgs, fried chicken, and all the sides and
trimmings. A ton of soda pop on ice, including those great old
drinks that take a special effort to get. We also had more than
a dozen cakes, plus pies, cookies, brownies, and more. Unlike
my usual, all the families brought stuff to help out.
There were girls and moms around, so we didn't have our usual,
casual nudity, but the boys spent most of the day in their swim
trunks, and it was a beautiful afternoon. Everyone left about
4pm, so we spent about 6 hours together, but we did make this an
occasion to celebrate all our graduates, and I was able to
distribute gifts.
I'm still not convinced it was the best idea, but I am convinced
it's something we all needed.
There were girls

There comes a point, where you have to start living again. Yes,
take precautions, but we all still have to have a life.

This is true, but it's also not everything. This wasn't just a
get together, it was a celebration. This year has probably been
harder on the kids in most ways, yet I have people who have lost
so much - graduation, prom, Spring Musicals, last chances to
perform, sports seasons. We did what we could to be safe, but
the other parents agreed with me that all these kids -
especially the ones who are finishing this year - deserved a
chance to celebrate and be recognized.
That's not to say it's all we're doing. I have email lists
going, and if we feel things get safe enough, we're going to do
something a bit more widespread. At this point, I'm not sure
how likely that looks, but we're at least considering the idea.
If it comes down to it, maybe next summer we can have Prom +1.

I'm glad you guys had a good time. I can believe that you all,
specially the boys, needed it. In the next months, we'll all
have to get used to making decisions and finding a balance
between minimizing the risks and going on with life.

It's like Daniel said, it's important that we do things like
celebrate accomplishments still, we just have to find the
balance between that and being safe, especially when we know
someone who is vulnerable right now.
Congratulations to your daughter, by the way.
