Happy Star Wars Day
By: Jack Date: May 4, 2020, 10:14 am
---------------------------------------------------------
May the 4th be with you!
We are taking today as an official school holiday, because 'why
not?'. Some of the boys are holding a marathon today, but we
decided we've seen the movies ad nauseam, so we're going to be
showing the Clone Wars cartoon instead. We also baked some Star
Wars cakes, but since we don't have a lot of fancy cake pans,
it's mostly just regular cakes decorated with Star Wars figures.
We also have a Legos competition this afternoon, and some of
the boys have a 'dinner show' prepared for us.
Other than that... Van is officially through with high school.
He had finished his distance learning classes before all this
finished, and his main classes with grades (as opposed to his
activities and band) were English and History. Both of those
teachers decided it would be easier to require themes than give
tests, and Van's have been turned in - both came back as As, so
he's graduating top 10%, though there's still some question of
exactly where.
The college boys are all prepping for finals now. I'm not even
going to go into all the details on that. We have moved two
white boards into their living room, so we can get everyone's
schedule listed. We've already had to re-schedule three tests
because of limited places to take finals online.
It's a little easier with the younger kids. Their finals don't
take as long for one thing, and I know people at all the
schools, if not the specific teacher, so people know and
understand our situation. Plus, those finals are scheduled to
fall the last full week of the month, so we have more time, and
the college boys will be out of the way.
This is a really horrible year for the virus and lockdown, but
it is saving my hash in one way. There were a lot of changes
and course revisions over the months and years, but this spring,
my college graduates are Mickey, Barry, Noah, John, Greg, and
Clayton. It's a huge disappointment that the boys can't get
together with all their friends and classmates to celebrate this
occasion. The schools are all doing some kind of virtual
commencement, and at least one of them is still planning to hold
actual ceremonies and celebrations, if/when things are safe
enough. In the same way, I've promised each of the boys some
type of graduation party with their school friends, once things
are settled and safe again. In the meantime, there are rumors
that Dad might possibly have overcompensated with graduation
gifts this year, because he felt so bad for their situation.
And that's about it for now - besides some general anxiety of
upcoming finals (and some general jealousy that a couple of boys
are already through with classes) things are going well here and
staying more or less on schedule.

Sad the graddies cant celebrate the moment properly or enjoy the
freedom they've gained. I daresay even earning some bucks will
be difficult for a bit, Are any of them helping with the
home-schooling

Earning bucks isn't a problem - they work for me every summer
and holiday, so they were included in the pay checks I'm issuing
now.
All of them have helped with home schooling to some extent,
though that has ended for most of them as we are coming up on
finals. As finals finish, they start helping again.
As for the freedom, we are cautiously enjoying a bit more right
now, and we're hoping to extend that more in a week or so.
