For what it is worth the artist was female.
Katherine Richardson (K.R.) Wireman (1878-1966) was born in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was raised as a Quaker. Both of
her parents died when she was a young girl, and she and her
siblings were raised by their four aunts. Wireman attended
Drexel University and then studied under Howard Pyle. She was a
prolific and successful artist who illustrated books,
advertisements, and magazines, including Country Gentleman,
Ladies' Home Journal, Saturday Evening Post, and Collier's.
Wireman was the sole breadwinner for her family, which was
uncommon in the early 1900s.
Wireman’s work was exhibited in 2013 at the Delaware Art Museum.
She created 22 covers for The Country Gentleman between 1916 and
1924.

You would typically only see barefoot children in pretty bad
slum districts in the UK... but in North America, barefoot boys
were fairly common during the summer months even in middle class
areas...[/quote]
Indeed. After coming home from elementary school on the last
day, I ditched the shoes for the entire summer (except for a few
hours each week for church). Tenderfoot at first, especially on
scorching hot Dallas summer sidewalks, but after a couple of
weeks the soles of my feet were pretty much tough as leather and
ready for anything. It was the same with every other kid in my
non-slummy neighborhood.

To me this picture says that very often something a bit odd is
going on where spanking is concerned. If we were to replace the
man with a boy over his knee with a man punching a boy we would
be horrified by the bystanders demeanour. That tells us that for
many a line can be drawn between moderate corporal punishment
and brutality. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence that people
look back on home and school corporal punishment with something
almost approaching affection. A child may get ragged after a
beating, but never after being beaten up. That is nothing new as
St Augustine (354 - 430) records how his family made fun of him
after school beatings. No one regales their friends with
childhood stories about toothache, broken limbs or being
bullied.
At least in part, I think my stories are a search to investigate
my fascination with spanking when I shy away from the infliction
of pain. My stories are not written to justify corporal
punishment, but perhaps they are asking whether a line can
safely be drawn between moderate corporal punishment and
brutality. Intuitively I feel it can, but intellectually I am
not so sure, the doubt probably arising because I cannot rule
out my intuition being influenced by the stuff churning around
in the id.

I just spent half an hour finding this thread so that I could
copy the picture and post it in a thread on MMSA, but the
picture is no longer there. Did anyone by any chance make a copy
or know where it can be found?
