Store Stuff

I don't talk about the comic stores often, unless they're
affecting my personal life. A lot of that is there's not that
much to talk about otherwise, and I know most of you aren't
interested in comics.
There is something I've discussed in the past, but, when I went
to mention it in the Troy's Treats post, it occurred to me that
I don't think I've ever mentioned it here, so a lot of the newer
members might not know about it.
I have a lady who works for me who is basically a decorator.
She works out of her house and does a number of different
things, but what she does for me is decorating. She comes in at
the first of every month and does window treatments. I usually
give her themes, we look at the type of material that we have
available, then she does the design, and installs it.
She also handles the holidays. That's really not much, since we
don't do much beyond the windows for most holidays. At
Halloween and Christmas, we're a bit busier. At Christmas, we
even do some re-decorating, since we actually put up trees at
each store, as well as hanging things, so it takes a lot more
time and moving things around. That's why we do this.
About 7pm Thanksgiving evening, so everyone has a chance to
catch the football game if they're interested, a group of
volunteer workers meet at the big store (which is where my main
office and the warehouse are). I pay everyone here a lump some,
because many of them don't work for me regularly anymore. Many
of them are kids who worked for me in high school (some of them
come back in summer and for Christmas, but not all), and some of
them are people who don't work for me. There are also more than
a few of my employees who try to work this into their schedule,
because I do pay well for what is night/holiday work.
They normally break into two groups, starting at the mall (there
are always security guards there for Black Friday stuff, so it's
no problem with us getting a crew in to work)., where one group
does the store and the other does the Imaginarium. One group
then goes to the campus store, while the other does Brian's
store, then the Lamar store. They then meet back at the big
store, where I've provided them with a Thanksgiving buffet.
They take a break, then do that last store. And now, when we
open in a bit over an hour, all the Christmas decorations will
be up.
I should probably also add that I have special playlists for
Christmas time. We normally use one of those retail radios, and
I just make a list of which channels the managers can use. We
normally alternate them about weekly, since that's how often we
expect our customers to visit (new comics arriving pretty much
every Wednesday, barring holidays). When it comes to Christmas,
I make my own playlist. This week, I'm mostly using a mix of
classic and alt-rock, with a bit of modern country mixed in, but
one out of every six songs is a Christmas tune. We'll change
that playlist for the next three Wednesdays. 12/4 will go to 1
Christmas song in four, 12/11 will go to one in two, and it will
be all Christmas from the 18th to the 24th (and I'll give the
managers the option of using the store holiday channel if they
get tired of my playlist, and since I avoid really 'kiddy' tunes
like Frosty, Rudolph, and Santa Claus is Coming to Town (every
time i hear the Bruce Springsteen version of that, I want to
deafen myself).

Yep. The busy life of an entrepreneur. Sounds like you have
everything well organized.

Well, we did have our 30th anniversary celebration a few months
ago. I'd better be well organized after that long.
