Upcoming Holidays
By: Jack Date: November 7, 2017, 4:39 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
For the record, and for those who don't already know, US
Thanksgiving is very early this year, on 23 November, which is
just 16 days away. Then we begin nearly the longest stretch
that can be between Thanksgiving and Christmas - 32 days. To
make things worse, that lands Christmas on a Monday, so the
school district chose not to release for Christmas vacation
until Wednesday, 20 December (with an early release the day
before to start vacation).
Oh, I should say that all the main food is already covered for
Thanksgiving, and that Christian and Jake Hogan accepted my
offer for them to join us, instead of paying the extra money to
fly home. Their mom actually didn't seem too upset about it,
which is good.
Here is a page with a brief breakdown of our regular Christmas
traditions
HTML http://bransomtx.com/Christmas.html
The big thing is we normally have all the kids over when School
releases, then we have the Tribal Party, a smaller get together
of our closest friends, Cousin's Night, a Quiet Night, the big
Christmas Eve Gathering, and Christmas Morning, which is for my
version of immediate family. Getting all that in is going to be
a bit tight, but here's what I'm hoping to try.
Saturday (16 Dec) - it looks like this is going to be the Scout
Christmas party and year in celebration/meeting. I had hoped to
have it later, but the Family Center is already reserved for the
23rd, and the Thursday before that sounds like it will be hard
to have a longer meeting - too many parents will have to be at
work the next day. I had considered having it in the tents or
at the Campus or Warehouse stores, but considering the size and
what I have in mind, the Family Center works best, so we're
going with this date, unless something really big happens.
This will be the Cub Scout Pack and the Boy Scout Troop both,
and I'm planning to get Derek and Mike to organize a Christmas
performance amongst everyone.
Tuesday (19 Dec) afternoon/early evening - Tents will be up,
some snacks will be provided. All guests will be welcome.
No sleepover that night (excepting daily kids whose parents find
it easier to leave them with us, rather than pick them up and
drop them off the next morning).
Wednesday (20 Dec) - boys parties. Probably planning to break
this up into four - lower elementary, upper, middle school, and
high school. I'm still looking at how to do high school, and
might make one of those Debate or have a debate in addition.
I'll get with the college boys over Thanksgiving to see what
they want to do about this.
Thursday (21 Dec) - I'm thinking hard this is going to be
cousins' night, so my brothers, adult sons, etc., can have a
quiet night and maybe do any shopping/wrapping/sanity-recovering
they need to do.
Friday (22 Dec) - Tribal Party!
Saturday (23 Dec) - Quiet Night. Immediate family snacking,
gaming, listening to carols, and watching a movie. This is
maybe Dad's favorite night of the year.
Sunday (24 Dec) - I'll bet you can guess this one ;)
There's probably a ton more stuff to share, but that's a good
stopping point for now.

i love how busy your Christmas schedule is. I bet it's difficult
to keep up with, but a lot of fun. :)

It is VERY difficult to keep up with everything, though I do
have a lot of help. The two best things are watching how much
fun the kids have, and the time right after Christmas, when we
have a quiet time.

College kids:
All the kids are getting out either Tuesday or Wednesday (unlike
their little brothers, who are out all week).
Home Tuesday - Greg (late), Ryan, Bryce, Barry, Noah, Johnny,
Josh, Jake and Christian Hogan
Wednesday - Mickey and John.
Greg and the two Wednesday boys are having to fly in, but it's a
shorter flight for Greg, and he decided to just come in late,
instead of messing with it all Wednesday. Mickey actually has
classes Wed, but only two, first thing in the morning. John
doesn't have any classes Wed, but he decided it would be easier
to catch an early flight Wed, than try to get out of class, get
to the airport, and catch the flight Wednesday afternoon.

Greg is the last guy I'm expecting home tonight. He's landed,
so he might be home in the next hour, just depending on how
traffic is two days before Thanksgiving, and if he has to wait
for his shuttle or not. The rest of the guys are here, and most
of them are organizing plans for the next few days (and doing
laundry). I think everyone is planning to eat supper here
tonight (steak and spaghetti - I cheat when i want to visit with
the kids).

I hope you all have a great time visiting with each other.
It might not be appropriate for this thread but how are the
first timer college boys doing?

Bryce has been just fine. He's down there with his four big
brothers and a number of friends. He's also been home a couple
of times. His brothers have helped him through the basic
adjustments, and he seems to be having a great time.
Things are a bit rougher on John, but he's made some friends,
and he's finding his classes to be enough of a challenge to keep
him interested, without leaving him overwhelmed. His two big
complaints are that he's not having enough time to keep up with
movies and TV, and that it seems like they're having record low
snowfall, so far this year.
