My mom used Mercurochrome when I was a kid, and I remember
hating it because it burned like mad. She said that proved it
       was working.
I will admit I'm a bit confused, because both that and Tincture
of Merthiolate still seem to be on sale, though 'mercury free'
these days, so I've no idea if they'd still burn like they once
       did.

That's what I thought Jack. I remember stocking Merthiolate on
the shelves at Kroger, before I retired a couple years ago.
I'll have to look next time I am in the store to see if they
       still carry it.
I checked online, Walmart, Walgreen and Kroger sell the Mercury
       Free version of it.
I know I got it on my cuts as a boy and I would start blowing
before mom put it on, because it stung something fierce. She
didn't use Iodine, because from what I remember Iodine could be
harmful and Merthiolate was considered safe to use at home.

That seemed to be a common belief among women of our mothers'
generations. It couldn't just be that they had a sadistic
       streak. :P

I'm pretty sure that is what Dad thought - that the more it
hurt, the better it was working at killing germs. Tincture of
Iodine was his favorite and I certainly agreed that it hurt the
worst. I'm sure it is also the antiseptic he grew up with since
it is dead simple (an element, Iodine, dissolved in alcohol) and
therefore one of the first to become available, with a reported
       first use in 1839.
