20 August 2019 - Practice Run
By: Jack Date: August 20, 2019, 8:48 am
---------------------------------------------------------
School starts here tomorrow.
Last night, chores were done by 8pm, and I did a strict walk
through, which ended with me giving several strikes, but no on
is in impending danger at this point. We also did a strict
bedtime, including for the older boys.
This morning, everyone woke on schedule, we had a regular (not
quite family) breakfast, and everyone got dressed, got their
stuff together, and was ready to walk out the door by 7:45. Of
course, they all dressed in 'play clothes', but we'll pick out
first day outfits this evening and have those sitting out, so
tomorrow should go just as well.
Curtis and Connor both seem to need more than 10 hours sleep,
but not a lot more than 10 hours. Since they both still get
their baths and everything the night before, I'm giving Curtis
an 8:30 bedtime and 8:45 for Connor. It's really not much
difference, but it's enough 'big brother privilege that Connor's
not complaining. I say it doesn't make much difference, because
the two of them mostly bath together. They're old enough now
that I don't really have to help. They wash each other's backs
and Connor makes sure Curtis' hair gets washed well, though I
still sometimes have to remind them that it needs done.
Craig and I had talked ahead of time. He seems to need between
9 and 10 hours sleep right now, so we've decided he needs to
have chores and homework done and electronics off by 9pm, which
is time for him to start getting ready for bed. That gives him
time to read or work on something else if he's not tired, but it
also gives him a chance to get as much sleep as he needs. I've
spoken to PJ and Bridgette, and they are using the same rule
with Jake and Brennan.
Most teens need between 8 and 10 hours. I prefer the boys to
start waking about 6:30 am, since no one has solo use of a
bathroom. Last night, I asked everyone to be settling down by
9:30. We're going with 'no electronics after 10pm', as a pretty
strict rule, though I'm willing to make exceptions. After a
week or two, I'll probably give them more leeway, as we make
sure of everyone's schedule, and make sure how much sleep
everyone needs on a regular basis.

Interesting that you have a rehearsal. Makes sense with as many
boys as you have.
I am one that needs at least 10 hours sleep. When I was in
school I needed 12 hours, but very seldom got it. One of the
reasons I was so difficult to get up of a morning. What
teenager wants to go to bed at 6:30/7:00 pm. (And I wasn't
sleepy, so I would have just laid in bed awake.) But going to
bed at 9:00 pm. meant I was a bear to get up of a morning.
As an adult, I mostly worked nights because of the sleep issue.
