       11 August 2019 - Devon's Friends
By: Jack Date: August 11, 2019, 4:40 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Football practice starts tomorrow morning. Devon will be
starting his first year in high school.
While Devon will still have some free time, we've been having
100F+/38C days lately, so he'll probably be pretty wiped out
when he's home. With that in mind, we decided to let Devon
invite a few friends over for an early 'end of vacation'
       celebration.
To be honest, most of Devon's friends are his brothers' friends.
After all, when he arrived, we had one boy his age and one a
year older, then my grand nephew Jake, and Jake and Ryan Tucker,
so there were a lot of kids for him to hang out with already
here. However, he and Kenny, despite attending the same school,
don't have all the same classes, so Devon has made some friends
of his own. Four of them made it today.
Three of those kids were football players. All of them (as far
       as I know) are 14.
Wesley Morgan is a bit on the small side... maybe a lot on the
small side, considering he's a football player. He's about the
same size as Jake (5'4" and 105 lbs), who's not big for an 8th
grader, but he's also cute as hell; with medium brown hair, dark
brown eyes, and a decent tan. He's also supposed to be really
fast, and he played wide receiver last year. He's hoping to get
the same position this year, or maybe land a place on special
       teams.
Drake Spencer, on the other hand, is huge. He's about my
height, so maybe 6', and he probably weighs 170 lbs. He's a big
boy! He's also fairly quiet and very polite. He's been playing
several positions the last couple of years, and he's hoping to
       play on defense this year.
Jordan Monroe is a little more average. I think he's about
5'10" and maybe 135 lnbs or so. He has dark blond hair and
blue eyes. He's also a sci-fi/fantasy fan, though he doesn't
get into comics beyond movies and TV. And while Drake is a bit
stocky and Wes is small, Jordan has a very nice build that he
       obviously works on.
Graham Tarrant is not a football player. He's one of those kids
who became friends with Devon mostly because they had about 11
different classes together the past couple of years. He
definitely fits in around here (probably the other reason he and
Devon are friends), since he's into cartoons, super-hero movies,
gaming, sci-fi/fantasy, and Godzilla. He's taller than Wes
(maybe 5'6") but he probably only weighs a couple of pounds more
       - skinny kid. He has dark brown, slightly curly hair, and blue
       eyes.
Graham and Jordan both live out on the bus route, so it's not
easy for them to get into town. Despite that, Graham has been a
visitor over the summer, and has made most of the summer movie
series. Jordan hasn't been here before, but he's going to start
coming after practice. His parents both work. They can drop
him off in the mornings, but he doesn't have a way to get back
       home, so he'll come here.
I've met all of the boys before, but it became worth mentioning
them today. I try not to embarrass boys too much, and I know
it's hard to tell what will embarrass someone. Drake had come
inside to help me carry some stuff. Once we got inside, I
thanked him and complimented him on his good manners. He
thanked me in return, but also mentioned that he'd 'learned them
the hard way', while brushing his hand across the back of his
pants. I suggested that many kids loose their good manners in
high school. He replied that he wouldn't loose them until he
was sure his dad had lost 'the strap'. The kid seemed shy, but
fairly honest, so I wonder if he knows Devon is still under
       threat of being paddled.

Now that is a visual image for your minds eye. A 6 foot tall,
170 pound boy bent over getting 'the strap' to his backside. I
get the image of Michael Oher from the movie Blind Side. Big
       Boy!

Drake made his comment the way many boys that age tend to do -
like he's pretty sure whuppings are a thing of the past, but not
like he's willing to bet his rear on it yet.

Well, they are probably not a thing of the past for Devon,
although it's been a long while for him, hasn't it?

I can't think of him receiving one lately. They probably aren't
a thing of the past, but he's at the age where he'll start
getting more input into what happens to his rear (paddled or
restricted along with the rest of him).
