2 August 2019 - Clubs and Groups
By: Jack Date: August 2, 2019, 3:13 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
While I just didn't have time to teach at BCA anymore, and time
was a bit tight even before Josh (Schleider, the former manager
at my campus location) moved on. However, I did enjoy teaching
and working with the kids, and I'm kind of going to keep that up
in a limited manner.
I've mentioned before that I work with a home school group. Our
campus store and the old Target store both carry a large
selection of genre novels (fantasy, sci-fi, a limited selection
of horror and mystery, along with any books that tie into a
large fandom, like Walking Dead, Buffy, Xena, etc... Because we
already deal with Ingram (the main wholesaler for books in the
US), it's easy for me to special order anything a person wants
(that's available).
Maybe a month ago (before we left on our vacation last month,
but after Independence Day), I was approached by the main
organizer of the homeschooling group and asked if I can work
with them on things similar to what I was teaching.
For them, I'm going to be running several groups - most of which
will be short-term, maybe even one shots. As you can imagine,
they'll be focused towards boys, though I won't forbid any girls
who are interested.
One of the women who's active in organizing this group is
friends with Ralph Peterman's mom. Because of that, they knew
that I have recent education and experience in raising and
teaching ADHD kids. They've asked me to meet with interested
parents in a group or two - or maybe something monthly - to
discuss those issues. While I didn't realize it at the time,
that's going to give me a great excuse to discuss spanking with
them and maybe even with the kids!
I'm still kicking around ideas on exactly how I want to do
things. I plan to wait until after school starts, when I'll
have a meeting with all interested parties. I will probably
have one meeting for parents and kids that will be about Books
for Boys in general, maybe a second about Comics as Literature,
and I'll have one that's just for feeling out what people think
they'd like to do - I can at least consider their ideas. One
thing about which I'm seriously thinking is using one of the
party room at the House of Bounce. We can do a book club, but
have snacks and play time for the kids, so they can burn off
some energy.
This could be fun and/or interesting for me, but it should also
help build traffic coming into the store.
Something else we're going to do for similar results is start
some fan clubs and maybe more general book clubs. The only time
we could really run those things is when school's not in session
(as opposed to the homeschooling oriented groups, which can be
done when my kids are at school), so I'm not planning to be as
involved in those. At this point, we're planning to do one for
Dr. Who. Chance is a big Whovian, so I'll probably let him run
that one, though I will probably ask either Andy or Bobby to
help him get things organized and running. As for me, I'm going
to be running one for Power Rangers. Once we get those to up
and running, we'll decide if there's enough interest to do more
and take suggestions on which other ones we should do.

Sounds like fun, and it's also work, but less work than regular
classes.

I'm posting elsewhere about the... call them study groups, I
guess... I'm doing with some home school kids. However, that's
not all I mentioned when I started this thread.
After thinking about it a lot and talking to the kids, I'm going
to back to working a couple of nights a week. It won't effect
my time here, but it does mean things will be a bit different
around here some evenings, mostly with Connor and Curtis. Of
course, I know have Jeremy and Chance both living here, along
with Liam and Van. I wouldn't trust Kaden or Zeke to handle the
boys for a prolonged period of time or overnight, but I think
they'll be fine for just a few hours, and Leif is more mature
than those two. In other words, with me going to be home in a
few hours, and with the number of older boys I have right now,
even if Jake, Ryan Tucker, and the Henderson boys are here, I
think we'll be fine.
At this point, I'm planning to work Saturday afternoon or
evening and maybe Tuesday night. On Saturday night, I'm
planning to run a campaign for Gloomhaven, a type of role
playing board game. I had also wanted to be involved with a
Power Rangers Fan Club, but I'm not sure if I want to work
another night to do it (or longer on Saturdays), so one of those
might fall by the wayside.
On Tuesday night, I'm planning to lead a Book Group, except
we're going to be dedicated to the Dresden files - reading the
entire series in order, including the short stories and original
graphic novels.

Jack can't help himself. He has to find more things to do.
Fill his plate even fuller. Take one thing off the plate and he
adds two or three other things to replace it. It's funny
really.
Good luck Jack with your new endeavors.

Yes, but, while I enjoyed teaching, that was five days a week on
a forced schedule. This is something more enjoyable, and, while
I'll treat it as a firm commitment, doesn't have quite the level
required or teaching. Besides, this is working back in the
store - just with a slight change in schedule back more closely
to what I once did.
