       Summer Movie Series 2019
By: Jack Date: June 10, 2019, 8:36 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I'm sneaking a few minutes to myself, while the younger kids get
ready for bed. Not that they're going to bed this early, but
they were in the pool most of the afternoon, and we decided to
watch a movie tonight, so they're getting the chlorine off.
In the meantime, I wanted to confirm that we ARE doing the
summer movie series this year. Most of the reason we're able to
do it, even with as crazy as things have been for me lately, is
that Jake Ames and Connor Joyce both love running it, and Noah
and Bruce Joyner are giving them a lot of help (as well as
drafting friends and brothers as needed for more assistance.
The college boys went back through records we've kept form past
summers, and they put together a list of what projects every boy
has already done, which also gave us a list of possible projects
to consider this year. Then we spent a couple of evenings
       brainstorming new project ideas.
Unfortunately, I have not kept a list of movies we've watched
before, since those were on the old forum, and a lot of my blog
posts didn't get saved, so I only have the movies we showed last
year, though I'm pretty sure we did all animated our first year,
and I think this is our fourth year to do it. Still, we have a
lot of new boys participating, and it has been four years now,
so I'm not too worried if we repeat (and I'm sure someone will
say something if it's a problem).
As a reminder, the summer movie series normally occurs on Friday
nights, takes place at poolside, is proceeded by dinner, and is
invitation only. Invitations might rarely be extended, but
normally have to be earned. In order to earn an invitation,
boys have to do scholarly projects. While this can be normal
things like a history or science project or a book report, we
also encourage the kids to do a lot of things to expand what I
call their cultural IQ. I think it was our first year that
Connor himself (Joyce, not Wells) did a oral report where he
ranked the top 5 Beatles favorites, discussed what criteria he
used to make that decision, then talked about his personal
       favorite.
The thing is, I want these to be fun. I want the kids to enjoy
doing them. My main goal is to keep the kids' brains active
over the summer, but I also want them to learn about new things.
While we do have a (rather large) list of projects from which
someone can choose, and we have an entire shelf of books to help
them think of things, we encourage the kids to come up with
their own ideas. We have a format they have to adhere to for us
to accept it. We might require changes to make it acceptable,
but I don't think we've ever not let someone do a topic they
       wanted to do.
We started Saturday night (I had a theater rented for Dark
Phoenix, so we missed our regular Friday), and this one was
'free' (no project required). We had a big crowd - nearly 50
kids. We grilled burgers and dawgs, served roast potato wedges,
then showed cartoons and shorts, took a break to serve popcorn,
then watched Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch, and the
       Wardrobe.
We haven't finalized the list yet, but this Friday, we're going
to be showing Stardust. We'll be showing the other two Walden
Media Narnia movies (probably with two weeks between each), and
we're probably also watching Princess Bride, Neverending Story,
and The Spiderwick Chronicles. We need 12 movies total, so we're
probably going to watch the Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, and maybe
Legends, Willow, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole,
or we might risk cooties and watch Ella Enchanted or Labyrinth.
I know we watched Dark Crystal and Secret of Nimh before, so
I'll try to avoid repeating them, but they're there if we need
       them.

I love Legends and The Spiderwick Chronicles. If you haven't
shown it yet, Time Bandit might be of interest. Be careful
around the cooties. They are highly contagious. But anything
with Freddie Highmore in it is good, which includes Nanny
       McPhee.
       Anyway, enjoy your movie nights.

I do like Freddie Highmore very much, though I've not seen him
       in that much.
You've recommended Time Bandits before, and I'm pretty sure we
showed it at the end of summer a couple of years ago, though I
can't swear if it was part of the SMS or just something we
       watched.
At this point, because the boys are running so much of it, I'm
leaving it up to them to finalize the movie list, without myself
just taking a veto, rather than complete control.

I'm a big fan of Freddie in August Rush, a sort of update of
Oliver Twist. A musical version is currently in development.

I agree Mr. Afinch. "August Rush" is one of my favorite movies.
Oh and don't forget, "Finding Neverland," but be ready to cry.
He's still working regularly also. Two new movies being filmed,
"Dragon Rider" (Voice Over) and "Way Down." One new movie in
       Pre-Production, "Canterville Ghost."

       I made a Boo Boo.
I said in a previous post that Freddie Highmore was in "Nanny
McPhee." That is incorrect. It was Thomas Brodie-Sangster in
       "Nany McPhee."

Though I like both of them, there is a pretty big difference
       between them.
Freddie is also doing a lot of work in TV these days.
A musical of August Rush should be interesting, though there was
a good amount of music in the film. It was also interesting to
see Robin Williams in a (his ony?) villain role.

He's more than "working regularly"; he stars in The Good Doctor,
       Monday nights on CBS.

I thought I had updated this, but apparently not. It is
sometimes hard to remember if I said something in chat or
       actually posted it. Whichever.
       So far,
8 June - The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
       14 June - Stardust
       21 June - Spiderwick Chronicles
28 June - Golden Voyage of Sinbad
While the boys seem perfectly with having burgers and dawgs
every night, much less just every Friday, I like some variety -
and I like them to get some variety. Tonight, we're having bbq
spare ribs, stuffed potatoes, asparagus spears, roast glazed
carrots, and garlic herb flatbread. The kids should be able to
       handle that with their fingers.
Yes, Craig and Chance will be joining us. Since Craig didn't
have time to finish a project this week, he's getting a freebie.

We did Spider-man: Far from Home midweek, so last night was the
regular Summer Movie Series. We had grilled garlic and herb
chicken with campfire potatoes and roast corn on the cob (donuts
for dessert). We did our typical mix of cartoons and shorts,
then watched Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.
Nothing special, but it was a good, fun night.
