31 May 2019 - Graduation
By: Jack Date: May 31, 2019, 5:40 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Last night was graduation for (and from) BCA. I really had four
of 'my boys' graduating last night: Zeke, Eddy Campion, Donny
Malone, and Jim Worley. There were several other kids who I
consider friends or even part of the tribe, but with whom I'm
not as close. None of them are especially boisterous, so we
ended up doing something a little different.
We did have a party, but probably of a different type from what
many would expect. Once most of the guests were gone, some of
my older kids cleaned up the tent and put up party graduations,
laid out some different furniture, and then the cooking began.
We ended up with 16 grads, who had time for chat and some stupid
party games before we served. We had one of the formal
celebration dinners we do from time to time, and Ryan, Noah,
Bryce, and Kenny knocked themselves out while I was at the
ceremony. We had steak, bacon wrapped scallions, grilled
shrimp, lobster tail, grilled asparagus, a roast vegetable
medley, a grilled salad and a regular salad, some kind of
cauliflower something, several types of potatoes, and I don't
even know what else, with a cheesecake bar for dessert.
Since I didn't know all the kids (I invited the four boys I
named, and four others, and allowed each of them a '+1'), I
didn't do graduation gifts at the party. However, Zeke got a
really good laptop. I went back and forth about getting him his
own PC, but he just doesn't seem to need it. With a laptop, he
can use it at home when he needs, but he'll also have something
he can move around if he need arises. Donny and Eddy both got a
Samsung Galaxy with a subscription, which should keep them going
for a while. I wasn't allowed to spend as much on Jim, but I
did get him a really nice backpack, which looks pretty styling
and should not only meet his college needs, but last him four
years (from what I've read). The other kids for whom I bought
got power cores (portable charges that work with USB cables, so
good for laptops, tablets, cell phones, headphones, etc....).
I'm not hosting tonight, since the BHS kids are a bit more party
oriented. I know the Family Center is hosting it's regular,
parent and business-sponsored Graduation Party, and I think
Parker is planning to stop by there for a while, before coming
back here. I do know that he, Jerry Costas, Jake Ames, and
Connor Joyce are all sleeping over here, and I have permission
from their parents for them to have some beer (or whatever).
The four of them talked it over a lot, but they decided they
just want to spend an evening together, have some good food, and
probably do something totally geeky.

Make that Root Beer. My personal favorite is Birch Beer. Then
my all time favorite soda fountain drink would be a Black Cow.
Root beer float made with chocolate ice cream and a squirt of
chocolate syrup. Unfortunately I am not allowed to have
chocolate anymore, so it would need to be made with vanilla ice
cream and no squirt of chocolate syrup. ::) ::) ::) ::)

I don't have floats often, but when I do, I prefer vanilla ice
cream with a Coke.

Okay, I need to update this before I totally forget.
We ended up having more guests than I expected Friday night.
Cole Cavanaugh, also a graduate this year, has broken up with
his girl friend since prom, and decided that he preferred to
hang out with his friends than go to a party and have to deal
with the social swirl. We ended up having cowboy steaks (also
called tomahawks, I believe) with roast potato wedges and garlic
Parmesan Texas toast. After eating and a couple of beers each,
the boys went skinny dipping for a while, before heading inside
to play Talisman. Lot's of nice scenery while we closed down
the grill.
